We discovered this area by accident. The Salvo Day Use Area sits on the Pamlico Sound side of Hatteras Island and is a relatively short walking distance from Salvo. What a cool place. It wasn't crowded during the times we were there. Water was relatively calm and clear. The kids were able to go out quite a distance from shore because the sound is so shallow. A lot of fishing going on. We watched lots of kite surfers doing their thing and saw lots of people kayaking. The shrub forest is worth exploring but be mindful that the mosquitos are plentiful and in some areas off the beaten path, you may need thick shoes because the cacti are plentiful and have spines long enough to stab through a rubber sole if you aren't paying attention. Obviously, the greatest aspect of this place is the sunset. We went almost every evening to watch the sunset and take pictures. It was awesome. There are restrooms, showers, picnic tables and grills here, so it's a great place to spend the day. No...
Read moreWe came here for vacation not knowing that dogs were not allowed on the beach because we saw other people on the beach walking there dogs so we brought ares. He is a small 8 pound dog and we had a little tent for him and he was just sleeping there not bothering anyone. We had no idea that he wasn’t allowed but we got charged by a very rude lady for 500 dollars. She didn’t even give us a warning or anything. She ruined are vacation for all of us. Now we are all upset and just want to leave. Definitely not going to come back again if this pet troll lady is going to be rude to us and charge us and make us leave the beach for something we didn’t know. There are so many other people who had and have problems with her and the police are involved now all because of how she is treating people and charging them ridiculous prices. Her name was PAR001 GET...
Read moreGreat place to watch the sunset over the sound. The water is shallow for a long way out, kids can wade without worrying. Kite sailing and kite surfers are often using the area. Although dogs are to be on leash, it's one of the friendlier dog areas on the banks. Nothing has been said to me regarding practicing retrieving off leash, in the big field or in the sound. There are a couple of trails to walk, although not much to see. There are restrooms, some picnic tables, but no pavilion or shade. If the ocean is too windy and wavy this is a good alternative, usually several degrees warmer also. Rangers patrol the parking lot regularly keeping...
