I have not had a good experience at William Carey or one as touted by whoever decided this was a great place. If you want a good scoop of knowledge on drawbacks and some positives, here you go.
#1. The faculty and staff in the Hattiesburg campus DO NOT care about you or your success at all. At best, I was funneled through an office with an advisor not even interested in my name. At worst, I could not trust anyone paid to do their job the right way. I would always end up running to 4 different buildings to do it all myself, because there is no real notification going on until the last second such as a hold on your account that could keep you from completing classes. You should also be on your "A" game when taking more complicated classes, especially science, as you will be cramming a ton to cover every detail they expect you to know in a 10 week trimester.
^^^SIMPLY PUT: You will be the one taking care of yourself and your business. A solid 80% of teachers refuse to offer any assistance at all and seek to passively insult you for even asking. I don't expect to be spoon-fed, but being a transfer student new to the system, I deserve some help. Smaller environment = worse treatment.
#2. If you feel like getting involved on campus, you'll have to make sure you visit the 2-3 campus activities. There are little to no campus wide activities happening to break the ice, and it's so small that cliques are everywhere. It's like high school all over again. Everyone's either severely socially awkward or acting drugged up. The only outliers are folks like me and people I know that came here, and the same thing happened to them.
#3. It's so expensive that you're better off at University of Southern Miss. for whatever your major is. In reality, the educational quality is the same, if not, better at USM in regards to the cost, especially. This school is making money with a majority of people who are apathetic, uninspired and lazy as instructors/advisors. Getting a bang for your buck will happen more at USM (if you want to stay in Hattiesburg) unless you're a religion major. (Also, a pack of scantrons will costs you about $4 for 6. Yeah, really.)
#4. This may tie in with the previous reason (cost), but the dorms are not very well built. I live in the newer dorms, and ants infested the place until I began setting up sugar traps around it. You can't leave a crumb on the floor without a colony in here due to an inch-wide hole where the wall should border off the wood panel floor. It's also kept pretty warm in here year round, and August-October was awful. My dorm's supposed to be the best.
PERKS: #1. This school is very safe and well kept overall. Security staff covers each exit 24/7 and ensure that students are safe, but this applies mostly in the evenings. They practically don't even look throughout the day or stop you. Also, dorms are locked with keycard monitors, and anyone wanting to get inside newer dorms must have their ID's on hand; otherwise, patrolling staff will keep an eye out.
#2. The cafeteria's food is surprisingly good compared to where else I've been. Even after months it remains impressive as they also try to provide healthier options along with junkier food (if you want it). The service that these workers offer to students is very good, and they're always willing to help feed those with allergies (gluten, shrimp, etc.).
^ Those are all the perks I can think of. In all honesty, this place wasn't the right fit for me. This college is for people who are way too scared to be in a population. I've tried my best to put up with all of these problems, and overall, it has not been worth staying. I'll tough out this last trimester and flip this place the bird when it's in my rear view mirror for the last time. Couldn't force me back here because of...
Read moreDon't belive the lies, they'll tell you if your not Christian you'll still love it, and the scholarships for such a "desirable" (read: expensive) college will make it tempting. Only thing you gotta do to keep it is to go to chapel every Wednesday. What they don't tell you till you're already settled in is if you miss even a handful of early morning chapels, they will fail you for every class that you are taking, no matter your grades. Getting up at 9 to listen to someone drone sounds easy enough at first, but most important and core classes don't take place till the afternoon, and keep you up a bit late so you can do the homework after. So 9 in the morning is gonna feel like 4. Oh and they lock the doors to keep you out if you don't get there in time. Even if they see you running to get there, depending on who's manning the door that day. Eventually found it hard to go to class at all, even for the subjects I loved. Why bother if you're gonna fail anyway, right? Now I've been dropped out a year, in 6000 worth of debt that they didn't tell me I was racking up, I get a job that wants to know how much college I had, they wouldn't let me get my transcript because I was in debt. At least till I pointed out I couldn't pay them back with no job. "Christian values" aparently is a word that means "no unless it means we can't get our money that we waited to the last second to say you...
Read moreI currently and happily attend. Pros: Everybody knows everybody Small class sizes Competent instructors Christian environment Nice though conservative people Its pretty safe on the campus, I dont worry about anyone stealing my stuff.
Cons: No smoking, so you have to go outside the gates and near the ghetto where there are gun shots A sort of curfew (better have your id after 10 pm The cafeteria is awful. There are roaches in the kitchen and the food store room- and forget eating healthy. Costing 880 for the 10 meal plan per semester. Very strict on guy and girl hang outs
In other words if you want freedom, the college experience and a degree... Dont go here. But If you want minimal distractions, a very southern baptist environment, and a degree come on over. All and all its a good place to go you just need to know the cons as well before hearing it be...
