My wife and I joined Susan for a 2-hour beekeeping class and it was absolutely wonderful! Susan is an amazing and passionate educator with a deep understanding of honeybees and the craft of beekeeping. After a warm welcome over coffee and tea (with honey produced by her honeybees!), Susan spoke to us about the importance and impact of honeybees over our daily lives, how she got into beekeeping, and the fascinating particulars of bees on Hawaii. She also showed us the various tools beekeepers use to care for and harvest products from honeybees. After the informative lesson and questions, we donned some really nice beekeeping suits and got down to business! Susan showed us the different types of hives she keeps, pointed out the differences between workers, drones, cells with honey vs cells with baby bees. We even saw the queen bee in one of the hives just going about her business. It was extraordinary being able to hold up a few hundred bees on a rack just inches from your face (and feel perfectly safe) to admire and observe them closely. If you’re at all interested in bees or beekeeping or honey, don’t miss this unique experience. Susan even gave us a tour of her farm afterwards where we met Pumpkin the turtle and Hildegard the turkey (and a wacky cast of other characters).

AMAZING!!! Most memorable Big island experience I’ve EVER had. Right up there with manta ray night swimming and seeing the lava flow. Susan was so hospitable and gracious in sharing her story, ranch and passion for bees. We booked the two hour bee experience and we learned a lot about bees in the presentation. Then we suited up in full body bee suits to go and watch her open up a hive so we could see inside and observe the bees doing their various jobs! We even got to hold the weighty frames full of wax, bees and honey for some unique photos and videos. The goats, cats, dogs, tortoise and chickens really added to the animal sanctuary vibes that Susan has at the ranch! One of the dogs sat on my lap for the presentation. So cute. ☺️ the best part was being able to find the queen bee and see her lay an egg inside one of the thousands of cells within the hive. Also we got to eat some of the honey right from the hive! Wax and all! (You just spit out the wax) so delicious. HIGHLY recommended booking an experience with Bird and Bee. Super interactive and educational. Authentic and informative. Wishing I was back on the ranch right now. So peaceful.

We had such a fun time doing the 2-hour Bee Tour! Susan taught us so much about the art and science of beekeeping, including the considerations of beekeeping on the Big Island. The "classroom" education portion was interactive and very interesting. We had some good conversations and learning opportunities as we enjoyed coffee and tea. Then we put on our bee suits and had the hands-on experience, interacting with the hives directly. It was such a cool opportunity to check the health of the hives and see the inner-workings close up. I even held a tray that was 15lbs of bees and honey! Afterward, we did a honey tasting that highlighted various island locations and flavors. It was so tasty and interesting! Seeing all of the rescued animals was a nice bonus as well. I highly recommend Susan's experience during your Big Island visit. She will inspire you to learn more and realize the importance of honey bees!
