These two caves were the highlight of our stay in Hilo. I have to say that they are much better than the lava tube in the volcano national park. There are two caves, the one on the left is easier (you can walk standing most of the time) than the one on the right after the stairs adjacent to the road. I don't particularly agree with people advising to bring super bright lights. I personally prefer the spooky feeling of the unknown, all you need is to see where you are stepping. It will be harder to take nice pictures without light but think about pleasing yourself first before strangers in the internet. You will need good shoes, a chocolate bar, water, and proper clothing. It is very humid in there.
Also, it would be great if you could avoid etching your name on the cave walls. That's just...
Read moreI have been caving for just over 30 years. This was a great cave to explore. While I did the entire distance in both the north and south points from the park to their ends, taking the larger opening and heading to the right hand side after the stairs is not for people who do not like tight places. Be smart, bring a top quality light, helmet, 2 backup lights, climbing boots, and appropriate clothing. We were both soaking wet after we explored. This trip there was water running in both sides of the cave, but not enough to stop us from reaching the end. Other people tagged along with us, one paid the price and was injured. Please take the right gear. If you are not able to take the right gear, do not venture too far into the...
Read moreIt was a great experience! There were two caves - one on the left and one on the right at the bottom of the stairs at the entrance. The one on the left is bigger and it takes about 10 minutes to reach the end of the cave. There was on opening at the end and you can see outside from there. The cave on the right was smaller and longer. It was so easy to bang my head to the ceiling. We reached to the end with crocs and flipflop but sturdy footware would make it much easier. Also, a flash light would be very helpful. There were many flashlights outside of the cave that people left for next people visiting the caves. Highly recommend you...
