Our visit was as described on the website. Obviously tasting chocolates was the best part and they are delicious!! Loved the dark 79% and the milk 50% and the vanilla was heavenly and I appreciate the 20% white chocolate too. There’s also orange chocolate and salted milk for those loving those flavors. Great gifts for anyone you may know on the island or maybe someone hosting you! Eat it fast so it doesn’t melt, hehe. We traveled as a family with a two year old and a four year old and the tour was very welcoming to them. Nothing particularly geared towards kids, just easy going, short enough time, good amount of off and on the golf cart, and they enjoyed the chocolate tasting too. I’d just recommend doling out their chocolate a little slower as the video after the tasting led them to get a little restless. If I’d had some of the chocolate still to hand out for patient listening then it may have helped them get through it- even if it was already pretty short. I learned a lot from the tour guide and didn’t really get to focus on what the video showed but I do appreciate that the guide talked us through the video instead of just plopping us in front of a tv and leaving us to listen. It’s also great that our tour guide is part of the working crew doing the harvesting and therefore had a great appreciation and knowledge to share about the cacao crops here. Also, there is a lovey little garden where the ducks Luis and Dewey will meet you post tour for some free feeding time. It was nice for getting a little walk in before leaving. Nothing very big, but good for stretching toddler legs a minute after some controlled tour time. The golf carts were kept very clean and had lots of kind and thoughtful amenities including rain shades, umbrellas and towels given the misty nature of this side of the big island. Also nice to have restrooms before the tour and midway through the tour. As we only barely arrived on time, they were even caring enough to give us a call to verify that we were indeed on our way. That was so extra thoughtful. What a wonderful staff and nice day out to a lovely...
Read moreOur family of five from Texas and Oklahoma visited Oahu and the Big Island for Spring Break! Our grandson saw a flier for a Chocolate Tour and added that to his “wish” list of things to do while at Hilo! We did some research and found that Lavaloha had an opening that worked with our plans so we scheduled the tour! Jess met us at the door for our tour and was super friendly, shared with us about some of their store products and even made some recommendations for some restaurants and places to visit (Punalu’u for malasadas and The Fish and the Hog in Waimea - Jess we Loved the Deep Fried Ribs - a new favorite)! Leigh was our tour guide and we Loved her!! She was very informative, very humorous and answered lots of questions as there were three children on our tour - 2 being our grandsons! We learned so much about the process of growing, harvesting and making the chocolate!! The highlight of course was the taste testing although I could not bring myself to try the cacao bean straight out of the pod, just too gross looking to me haha I have no idea what I thought a cacao bean looked like but I certainly did not have an accurate picture in my mind LOL The chocolate tastings were so delicious!! It was hard to pick a favorite, so I had to purchase several different types!! Our tour ran over by about 30 minutes and no one in our tour group minded one bit!! Noone on the tour even realized we had gone over until Leigh realized and quickly ushered us to our cart to be taken back to the store! If you go to Lavaloha, be sure to tour the Memorial garden in front of the parking lot..absolutely gorgeous tropical plants and flowers planted on a sunken lava tube! Grandsons enjoyed feeding the ducks that hang out around the garden!! I cannot recommend Lavaloha enough!! Thanks again to Jess and Leigh for a wonderful...
Read moreWhile on vacation we decided to check this farm out and book a tour. Who could go wrong with chocolate right?? The road to get to the farm is absolutely beautiful. Once we arrived we were greeted by Ken who also checked our temperature for safety. We decided to do the tour by cart ride. The farm is amazing, peaceful and beautiful... not to mention huge. I believe he stated there were over 10,000 trees, all of which were in different stages of life. We got to drive around and look at the different types of cacao trees and he explaind the pollination process, how some are hybrids and also picked a beautiful pod for is to which he allowed us to try the fruit. This was our first time trying and was totally not what we expected. It was very sweet however the seed not so much. As we drove through he told is about the.land and how it all started, as well as the worth of the beans back in the days. We got to see where and how they separate and dry the beans. This is a tedious process and it gives you a greater appreciation for the chocolate making process. We were taken to a comfortable little room in one of the buildings where we sat on a couch and watched a video on the chocolate making process. Throughout each process that we viewed we were able to try the chocolate they were showing the process of making. I don't know if it's because we were there watching the videos but boy their chocolate was amazing. So rich and creamy. We learned so much and enjoyed our guide. I would highly recommend booking a tour or if you just want some chocolate stop by. You won't regret it. They have a little shop where you can purchase chocolate, honey, coffee and so many other things. It's totally worth checking out. Enjoy! If you read my review, please hit the like...
