This place is also known as Chinaman's Hat
Every time one of my friends visit me, they want to go here. So, naturally I hate this place now. BUT, you should go. I have heard locals say you can walk out when the tide is low but I have yet to see anyone do it because it's a dumb idea. You can buy snorkeling gear for $20 and it will make this experience WAY more fun. At most, you will be swimming in 4-5 ft. of water. I have hiked the island barefoot, but bring water shoes or a dry bag with shoes in it if you prefer.
Once there, I usually tuck my snorkel gear behind a bush off the trail so I can explore without carrying it around. I definitely recommend walking around and not going straight to the summit. There are some beautiful coves and you might find some shells worth keeping. There are lots of trails leading to the top. Start on the side of the island closest to Oahu (probably where you started the trek unless you kayaked). The trail will get steep quickly. Stay on the same side but veer more to the right for the easiest path. The easiest path I have found still has some areas that can be sketchy closer to the top. It’s not vertical rock climbing, but if you fall it would be problematic. Go slow and at no point will you ever need to be dangling from your fingertips. Always maintain three points of contact and you will be fine.
Once you're at the top, enjoy...
Read moreWe planned on going to see this attraction but accidently stumbled upon it while enjoying our drive around the coast. Such nice sites to see. The waters in this cove were murky and the beaches were cluttered of high tide marine debree. Such coastal marine degree offers a treasure of items lost at sea as well as the elusive Sea Bean and exotic shells. So we take advantage of the situation. Found us two Sea Beans. China Mans hat is a beautiful site and the mountains on the opposite side are quite a site also. We recommend driving through and getting your photo. But personally, there are better places to swim if that's what you are looking for....
Read moreHigh-yield adventure—awesome hike and not a long kayak to get to it. We rented from Active Oahu, about 30 mins away, and they had foam blocks and straps to put the double kayak on top of our small sedan. We followed their map of how to paddle out there (there’s a specific route, and if you take shortcuts, you’ll be working way harder than you need to!) and got there in 20-30 mins. The hike was steep and kinda slippery due to recent rain. Some scrambling at the top with ropes. The view at the top was amazing. We also saw two monk seals. A highlight of...
