If you like taking boatrides and such and are into a the diving, scuba or snuba, this is a fun spot to visit. Takes about an hour to get there on a larger boat. Our boat served us breakfast and lunch with was nice. There are tons of other boats there so don't expect to be all alone. Maybe even more people than if you were snorkeling on many of the beaches. Inside the crater it gets deep quickly, so if you only have a mask and snorkel best to stay close to the rocks if you want a close up of the reef. We did a snuba dive and it was fun to get under the water a bit more, but was challenging at first. I've snorkeled in other spots and had great success also though. To me the fun was the adventure you get with the boat and crew and experiencing new places. I think most boats will take you to other locations also weather permitting, so you get a few spots...

When we set out to the island from the keihi boat ramp I got a little motion sickness so they had to take me back. Luckily I was able to get two dives in before I went back. The island is actually a sunken volcano. The bottom of the crater is only about 15 feet deep from the top of the water surface. The guides warn you to keep away from the edge or slope of the volcano. It drops down to about 200 feet and the current is strong enough it can sweep you right out to deep open water. The coral shimmers and glows when hit by the sunlight. The fish are not scared of you and are actually so curious they swim right up to you, checking you out. These particular black fish would swim right between your legs, underneath your belly, all around you. This was a for sure bucket list experience that I...

A lot of people will talk bad about this location. Local tour guides I used to work with would always say it's all dead. I avoided it for 8 years living here. I made a huge mistake. It's so beautiful. It's so calm and natural in shallows. I'm sure it's not always like that but it was so perfect the day I went. We went with the calypso out of Maalaea harbor. The boat was a smooth ride. The slides and jumping platform were really fun in this area. I now recommend going to anyone who asks. It's a magical little spot. Yes there are a lot of boats and people. It's not a private location at all but it is one of the most fun things you can do with a group and...

This was one of the most rewarding dive sites ever. We were fortunate enough to swim with a monk seal on our first tank at dawn. The visibility was about 90-100 feet! We also had a dolphin escort us on the way in and watched whales on the way out. I highly recommend booking your dive/snorkel ahead of time. Earliest slot is best for visibility and calm. We booked our dive with Maui Dreams Dive Co. which contracts out to Island Style Diving boat which left the harbor just before dawn. Sounds early, but it got us there as one of the first boats before the crowd. The crew provided ample dry storage onboard and lots of fruits, muffins, chips, and bars.

You do need a boat to get there. We joined a tour that brought us there on a cruise. This time water was clear with excellent visibility. Second time visiting this spot 5 years later. The snorkeling experience was so much different than the first time. Remember your snorkeling experience is greatly affected by the weather and water condition. It is purely luck. Highly recommend you bring your own fins so you can dive deeper to swim with the fish. Be sure not to touch the coral on the bottom!
