The route to Waimanu campsite is about 10 miles if you start from the road behind Waipi’o lookout. It took us about 6 hours while carrying 25lbs and 45lbs packs. Plan ahead for sunset times and give yourself about 6-8 hours to work with (if you aren’t an avid hiker).
The first mountain is rough to climb but has a good trail to work from. If you are trying to get all the way over to Waimanu campsite… The last mountain leading into the valley is super rough to go down/up. After helipad 4 the trail turns more into a “path” and becomes pretty slick and dangerous to go down. I would not recommend going past helipad 4 after heavy rainfall.
Be prepared for two stream crossings (Wailoa stream and Waimanu stream). Bringing along water shoes/sandals works best in order to keep your feet dry. You’ll cross water before the first mountain and you’ll cross water after the last mountain, both ways. If you’re the super prepared type, try timing your Waimanu stream crossing to low tide. It helps with water visibility to see which rocks you want to step on or grab.
Overall the hike is difficult. The highest peaks are around 1,300ft but with all the declining/inclining switchbacks, you work about 2,500ft of elevation gain throughout the route.

Read moreI hiked to Waimanu Valley in this trail years ago. Beautiful hike. Lots of up and down, including the switchbacks up from Waipio Valley and down into Waimanu Valley, and back. Against warnings I decided to do the out and back in a day. I started a little after sunrise and got back to the Waipio overlook a little before sunset. That last stretch up the road out of Waipio was rough, taking many breaks. I took everything needed just in case I had to stay the night out, minus a shelter. I wouldn't recommend this to everyone but I felt strongly to do it so I answered the call. A great last day of my Big Island visit....
Read moreWas fortunate enough to be able to hike the Mulawai trail to Waimanu Valley to camp for a few nights. Pack light it's quite the hike out with a lot of elevation in the heat. There are several (12-13) creek gulches that follow the cliff side north to Waimanu Valley. Any previous rainfall can make the trail very slick. Bring lots of water if you plan to hike during the...
