Spare Key Winery — Attraction in Hayes Township

This winery is clean and beautiful. We tasted their wine and some were nice. We bought a bottle of white called Elvira. Several weeks later we noticed that the aluminum foil cover rasied up about half an inch. We didn't think too much about it so we removed the foil. To our surprise the cork had a round indentation on one side. Probably due to the machine used to insert the cork. We removed the damaged cork. The bottom of the cork had a peculiar smell. Then we tasted the wine. It had spoiled. Very bad taste. We poured it out. I know this happens to wines occassionally. We were just disappointed that this happened. Hope to call them when they reopen. Just got off the phone with Mike he offered to replace the bottle but we are full time RV'ers and won't be back in the area. I had a fantastic experience here. I came in while on a weekend wine tour on a moody autumn day. The wine here was exceptional and unique. They are a small winery working with unique grapes making fascinating wines. It is always a delight to see people with passion innovating and that’s what’s being done here. My husband and I stopped at Spare Key Winery after spending the day in Petoskey. The wine was amazing and the atmosphere was warm and inviting. There is a wide range of seating available and the outdoor seating was relaxing. We enjoyed talking with two of the owners and hanging out with their dog Brew while having two rounds of wine tastings. If you’re looking for a quaint and family owned winery, this is it!
