The last few miles of road leading to the parking lot is a very narrow dirt & rock road. In most places there is only enough width for one car. If you encounter another car, one of you may need to back up to a spot wide enough for two cars. You are on the side of a mountain, so just driving off the side of the road is not an option. A few parts of the dirt road are washed away by heavy rains too. You must skillfully straddle the washed out portions with your left and right tires, driving diagonally at times. I would recommend not taking a regular passenger car on this road at all. A truck or SUV with extra ground clearance would be best. Once we arrived at the small parking lot we found the gates to the campground closed. The campground itself seems like it has been abandoned for a while. Walk around the gate and walk the remainder of the gravel road where it has a little loop to turn you back around. The walking trail starts at the end of the loop. It is a short easy walk...
Read moreWe made the hike to Horsetrough Falls with our dog. It was winter, so the campground was closed, so had to walk an extra half-mile to the trailhead. The forest road to get in is long and narrow, plan on taking close to 30 minutes to drive the 5 miles. There is a roadside waterfall on a tributary of Spoilcane Creek less than half a mile from the paved road and two more on Wilks Crek about 3.5 miles down the road. The Horse Trough Falls Trail is very short and easy, less than a quarter-mile and ends at a viewing platform for the spectacular Horsetrough Falls. There is another waterfall not far from here - at the start of the hike, don't cross the footbridge over Chattahoochee River, instead follow the river up on the river-left side. About a quarter mile to the base of Chute Falls, a neat little waterfall through a narrow gorge. Great area and definitely...
Read moreCLOSED UNTIL 2023: We were unable to get to the falls at all because it was closed, but not posted that it was closed on both access roads. The east entry was gated closed with a sign that it was closed temporarily due to weather but the weather was perfect and had been for days. So we drove 8 miles to the West End and there was a also closure after we went down a 7-mile gravel road. When we reached the dead end 2 miles from the falls, the letter from the forestry says it was closed until 2023 so it would have been helpful if that closure letter had been posted at the first entry from the main road on...
