An intense hike that I would recommend having a hiking stick for… at least until the rock stairwell begins. The first part of the hike is not technical, it is just the verticality. Even if you are in good condition, it’ll take the wind out out of you.

A part of the hike where you climb the rock stairwell, this part is technical, but it’s a great confidence builder as it makes you consciously think about foot and hand placement and deliberately execute.

Would not recommend the 2nd part of the climb for people...

Beautiful area to explore and see God’s creation! Several trails will get you Indian Staircase, but the closest is Bison Way. Parking lot is small at the trailhead but there is other parking available nearby. Trail up to Indian Staircase is not marked, so it’s easy to miss. See picture of map for trailhead and trail junctions. You can also camp in the area with no permit required, but will need to get a vehicle pass for overnight parking. Those are available at nearby establishments. Stargazing...
