Somewhat hidden on the second floor of the Hill City Visitor’s Information Center, the CCC Museum of South Dakota is a gem that, in my opinion, is a must-see for anyone who truly appreciates the many incredible landscapes in the Black Hills (as well as so many other locations in Nat’l Forests and Nat’l Parks around the country). We literally stumbled across this location while touring around as my eye caught the small ‘CCC Museum’ sign with just enough time to turn into the parking lot. We arrived just minutes before the Visitor Center closed and, even though the museum proper was closed, the person tending the visitor center unlocked the door and allowed us a quick visit; you do not get that kind of service and trust in many places these days! If you don’t know anything about the ‘CCC boys’ from FDR’s ‘new deal’, they are basically responsible for building our national parks and many only outdoor amenities in national forests and the like. Even though I have researched the CCC era for many years, this museum contains many artifacts that I had never seen before and was truly a pleasure to visit. Read moreI was thrilled to discover the CCC Museum of South Dakota during our visit to the area. As someone with a great affinity for the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC), I was delighted to see the museum's fantastic collection of photos and items. The exhibits were thoughtfully arranged, providing a thorough and engaging look into the history and impact of the CCC.
The highlight of our visit was the friendly and knowledgeable volunteer who greeted us. They took the time to answer all our questions about the local CCC buildings and sites around the Black Hills, which we were planning to visit during our stay. Their insights and enthusiasm greatly enhanced our experience, making our visit to the museum even more memorable.
One of the best parts is that the museum is free, making it accessible to everyone who wants to learn about this important piece of history.
Overall, the CCC Museum of South Dakota is a hidden gem that offers a rich and well-presented tribute to the CCC. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in history or the legacy of the CCC. Highly...

Reading original documents, letters with firsthand accounts, and original artifacts and photos. Such a treasure and special place. So glad we stopped by! And I love my...
