Sourland Mountain Preserve, located in Hillsborough, NJ, offers a serene yet rugged escape for nature lovers and outdoor enthusiasts. Spread over 4,000 acres, this large preserve is a haven for hikers, bird watchers, and those seeking solitude away from urban sprawl.

The landscape of Sourland Mountain is notably diverse, featuring rocky terrain, dense forests, and wetland areas that host a rich variety of flora and fauna. The preserve's trails cater to all levels of hikers, with the Ridge Trail being a popular choice. This 5-mile loop challenges adventurers with its rocky climbs and rewards them with sweeping views of the surrounding landscape.

Birdwatching is particularly rewarding here, with the preserve being a habitat for over 100 bird species, including the elusive hooded warbler. The forest also supports a range of animal life, from the box turtles crawling underfoot to the white-tailed deer glimpsed amongst the trees.

For those interested in geology and natural history, Sourland Mountain Preserve doesn't disappoint. Its boulder fields tell the tale of ancient geological forces, and the area's history as a haunt for early settlers and Native Americans adds a layer of intrigue to visits.

However, visitors should be prepared for the preserve's rugged terrain. Proper footwear is a must, as the rocky paths can be challenging, and some trails may not be well-marked, adding an element of adventure to the exploration.

Despite its challenges, Sourland Mountain Preserve remains a cherished green space in central New Jersey. Its undisturbed nature not only provides critical wildlife habitat but also offers a peaceful retreat for those looking to reconnect with nature. Whether you're a hiker, a nature photographer, or simply someone in need of a break from the digital world, Sourland Mountain offers a rich, immersive...

A great park to visit if you enjoy rocky trails and a bit of a workout. Sourland is a beautiful park I’ve had the chance to visit on several occasions. There are some easier trails, but if you’re looking for a more interesting experience, do check out the rocky trails. Though a word of caution: the trails can get tricky and could be challenging for anyone with stability issues or joint issues. The rocks can be slippery depending on the weather and hiking shoes are strongly recommend. Unless you are a truly seasoned hiker, don’t bring your bike. While there may not be waterfalls, there are many beautiful way points and a great view overlooking Hillsborough along one of the easier trails. Parking is ample and the trails are well marked. I didn’t notice too many bugs, but bring water and...

Awesome hiking!!! For me, it's close to home but even if it wasn't, it'd be worth the trip. Today was my first time there. I love hiking and have hiked most areas in NJ. This is a great mid -sized preserve that has several miles of trails. I hiked about 6-7 miles today but you could extend that by about 3 more miles, without going in circles. If you repeat trails, you could go all day. The terrain and inclines are moderate. It is not boring or overly simple, nor is it overwhelming. It is a perfect place for a couple hours out hiking in the woods. It is very quiet. It does not get crowded. There is only 1 parking lot and it was almost full today but the trails still did not seem crowded. I definitely recommend checking this place out if you enjoy a good...
