We didn't actually stay at the picnic area, we hiked as far as we could (about 3,5 miles till snow got knee deep eve on a trail). The hiking is beautiful, absolutely recommend it, snow is beep but packed on a trail, so I'd say just regular hiking shoes will work for you. But if you want to go far away snowshoes will be handy. We saw people on a Splitboard on a trail, they said it's a good trail for that. However, despite much enjoyment on a hike, when we returned to a picnic area that was quite crowded, with a lot of rude and uncontrolled dogs off leash and with dog poop everywhere. I would say there's about 3 smaller sites with 2 tables, 4 medium sized, and one extra large with several tables. They are fairly okay maintained. There are bathrooms, but it's just a portapotty style, and there are no sinks, no sanitizer, and I could not seen to find water anywhere. The bathrooms are also spider infested, yuck. Half of them were closed due to coronavirus, but denying people access to a bathroom seems like the opposite of good...
