The Sand Dollar Cottage in Waialua, Hawaii Beach Homes
First the good things: The view is amazing, and the sound of the waves is gorgeous. The fridge was very clean on the inside, same as the oven. And they provide a big safe (capable of holding a laptop and a camera) which prevents a lot of stress when doing excursions. That´s definitely a plus. Also, they provided us with an initial set of paper towels, toilet paper, towels, laundry detergent, coffee and the premise provides a laundry room with three washing machines and dryers.
However, the house is not as comfortable as it could be due to a lot of mold, e.g. in the curtains, desk lamps, pictures and cushions and due to the cleanliness, since the place was only superficially cleaned. We know of course that the location is in a very humid area, but some of it seems avoidable or may be reduced (e.g. by washing the curtains and the cushions. Another idea: Maybe don´t use so much things that can get moldy. The lamps don´t need lampshades made out of fabric and to hang pictures use materials which are not so sensitive to the surroundings like some kind of metal prints – even though the pictures are beautiful. Even more reason not to let them be destroyed.
Further: The faucets in the shower were leaking underneath while using. Some of the towels were ripped. The lid of the trash in the kitchen was broken and dirty. The scissors were so rusty we couldn´t use them. As mentioned, you can´t prevent that totally in such a humid area – but there should be things provided to the guests that they can actually work with. The fans were really dirty and some of them full of dead bugs. We didn´t need dead bugs flying around additional to the living ones.
Hawaii Beach Homes tells upfront that there are more insects on the island than on the mainland. Actually, there are a lot more bugs than on some other parts on the island. But that´s nature – we wouldn´t complain about that. However: Dead bugs in the lamp, on the walls, on the ceiling feeding the spiders in their nets – we think that there can be something done about that. Some mosquito nets and the main entrance door frame were ripped / broken and were tried to be patched with tape, which does not really seal out the bugs. Repairing by taping seems lower camping style (see the photo of the front-/kitchendoor).
We post a few exemplary pictures showing that a lot more TLC is needed to make this the home that is advertised.
Hawaiian Beach Homes have their own App called “Hospitality”. They asked us with an automatically created message “How´s everything going?” – so we used that chance to mail them a few things and to send some pictures. Although we hadn´t any idea what they could do about it during the timeframe of our stay we told them, that we are open to suggestions. We didn´t get an answer from them but another Mail asking for our review....
Read moreI decided to rent a home through Hawaii Beach Homes because their terms seemed more flexible given the covid situation. They did not demand an upfront deposit and actually didn't even take any type of deposit for 6 months after I booked Sunshine Reef. This was a distinct plus for me after having read how hard it was for some people to get deposits returned on VRBO and ABNB. They communicated with me every step of the way. We found Sunshine Reef to be quite well maintained although not new. Very good home for our extended family of 12. No one had issues at all with the property. A/C blew nice and cold throughout the unit. The star of the property was a virtually private beach. My kids and grandkids never tired of quick dips in the ocean after sight seeing during the day or before going out. Hot tub was also a hit with my family. Plenty of towels and 2 washers and dryers we well used. My family would love to go back at any time and we would not hesitate to use Hawaii Beach Homes on our...
Read moreMy wife and I have been planning for our wedding at Honolulu this May and my wife has spent weeks on finding a 5-bedroom house for our entire family. Several days after signing the rental agreement with Hawaii Beach Homes for a house locates very close to Waikiki beach, the company emailed us without any apologizes, simply stated that there was a double booking for the home we booked and moved us to another house that is one hour away from the Waikiki beach. Even though I can't really comment on the property, for the people want to rent from Hawaii Beach Homes, please keep in mind that signing the rental agreement with Hawaii Beach Homes DOES NOT guaranteed you a place to stay. UPDATE: Not only the company refused to provide any other alternative for our stay, Hawaii Beach Homes made another charge on my credit card rather than refunding my money in full. It is clearly a mistake made by the company and it really shows the POOR professionalism of...
