Visited 9/9/19, not many people there. Huge parking lot. Bathrooms are gross smelling and I'm pretty sure one is closed. Someone left their trash outside the bathroom doors even though there are trash cans inside. Hiked white river canyon trail to the timberline cutoff (saw a tent camper here). Trail is not well maintained after you climb the hill, there are several blow downs on trail. Beautiful area. Have been here multiple times and will def be back for more. 3.85miles with 725ft elevation gain in 2hrs 32 mins total time.
Visited Sunday 3/7/21, the sno park was groomed alot better than the previous year. There was a thin dusting of snow on top of icy pavement. The bathrooms are still stinky (strong amonia) but were a lot more clean. The park was not as busy as when I visited 2020, same time of year. Only two big groups training at 8am. Around 12pm the families were out with their kids, etc (not a lot of masking up going on), but the parking lot was still less than half full. Avy Danger (pinwheels and cornices) make going up to timberline from white river impossible right now. The trail on the way back was icy (a couple of us had accidents when our snowshoes hit the icy snow the wrong way). 3.3 miles with 615ft...
Read moreWe car camped at White River Sno-Park for a night and it turned out to be one of the most peaceful, beautiful winter setups we’ve done. Waking up to a snow-covered valley with Mount Hood glowing at sunrise was honestly unreal — the kind of view that makes you just stop and take it all in.
The hike along the river is mellow and super scenic, especially in the early morning light when everything’s quiet and frosted over. There’s something pretty special about being out there before anyone else shows up.
We brought a little stove and cooked breakfast by the river, surrounded by snowy trees and fresh mountain air — simple and perfect. There’s plenty of space to spread out and explore, whether you’re just doing a short snowshoe or want to go farther up the trail toward the mountain.
If you’re into car camping in the snow, this spot’s a gem. Easy access, no crowds if you go early, and some of the best views of Hood you’ll get without...
Read moreThis is a great location with beautiful views. You can go hiking in the summer and sledding and snowshoeing in the winter. There are pit toilets on site. There's also a nice information board which talks about the history of the area, flooding, and the challenges they faced building the Hwy 35 bridge which crosses the river near here. When sledding in the winter, be mindful of the direction you are sledding. I've seen people have to roll off the sled at the last minute to avoid going snowfield edge into the river. I've also seen a few people almost hit trees higher up the snowfield. That said, it's a great location with lots to do. There sledding and snowshoeing here is excellent, and it's a nice hike in the summer. The boulders near the river can be quiet large, so if exploring down there in the small just be careful when...
