This may be a good trail for locals, or perhaps you just need to go at the right time. However, I have enjoyed many other balds that are closer to Asheville with better accessability to the parking area, and a better hike to the top. You WILL need a 4 wheel drive to get to the parking area, depending on which way you drive to the top. There are two trails from the parking area, an easier hike to the left and a more difficult hike to the right. We went in January and the trail was completely mud, we were slipping and sliding everywhere. Once you get to the top, beware of the multiple routes to get back down to the parking area. There are different, blaze marked trails down, though if you happen to follow the middle trail from the top of the bald to the bottom, you may find you took what is a "closed" trail. There are branches and a fence to block that path up to the top, but nothing to let people know it is closed when heading back down. All in all, we were very upset to have driven so far for such a...
Read moreAbsolutely amazing views. As a professional Trail Guide, I have sought out many views, and experienced some amazing sights that you can only see by being many many miles deep in the woods. I was utterly amazed at the views and the eclectic ambience for a place that is merely a two-minute stroll from a parking lot. There were so many people here, yet at the same time it felt peaceful and private. Many people were laying in the grass reading books having a snacks offering thru-hikers some Trail Magic, a few overnight campers. Some people were being loud and social while others were keeping to themselves, it was fun, but not distracting, it somehow added to the beauty. I drove up in a Honda Accord from exit 7 off I-40. I would suggest not to do this in a non 4-wheel drive vehicle if it's been recently raining or snowy or icy. The way back we went through downtown Hot Springs, that drive was two or three times longer but probably...
Read moreAbsolutely gorgeous trail - the views are insane. The hike itself is not hard at all. It loops around so if you'd like an easier hike up with a short section of steep steps down start the trail from the left. We went right to go up the stairs for more of a workout.
The trail itself is pretty short, and the views from the top are gorgeous. The amount of effort vs the view you get at the top is unmatched. We went around lunchtime on a Monday and it wasn't too busy. I'd love to come back for a sunrise or sunset hike. Be warned - lots of bugs buzzing at the top. For us it was mostly just a swarm of ladybugs which was a fun surprise! I'd bring bug repellent next time just for the other more bite-y bug friends up there.
The road to the top is a bit scary (gravel path) but I was able to get up the mountain fine in my sedan (4 wheel drive not required).
I would definitely do this...
