This site is very cool! There is a small museum interpreting Fort Towson (first syllable rhymes with “cow”) and the wreck of the steamboat Heroine, which occurred nearby as the ship brought supplies to the fort. There is also a trail outside leading to various ruins from the fort, as well as to the reconstructed sutler’s store. The whole experience took about 45 minutes, and was well worth the visit.

Fort Towson Historic Site is a beautiful historical site with a lot of information about this once thriving fort in Oklahoma history. I highly recommend a visit here if you are in the area.

The historic site has a very nice museum telling the story of the Fort and the surrounding area. Also about riverboat travel on the Red. A great place to stop on a weekend road trip.

It was something to do on our way through. I wouldn't drive out of my way to see it only but it was nice. New building for the museum. Nice place to walk around and learn a little about history of Indian nations. I found it ironic that the gifts in the gift shop came from China instead of supporting the local artisans. Overall it was a...

Great place to stop on your way to Broken Bow area. Grounds of old Fort Towson date from the early 1800s. Museum has interesting artifacts from the old fort and also tells of the excavation of an old paddle wheel boat on the Red River. Easy access. About a mile...
