As Brian S. notes, this was the very first lighthouse station in the United States, established in 1716 with the current 75 foot tall conical tower dating back to 1783 (raised to 98 feet in 1856). If you look at Boston Harbor, you'll see that there was a big need for such things with all the small islands here including this one, Little Brewster Island.
