A hostess at a Burlington cafe noticed my owl shirt and asked if I got it at the Birds of Vermont Museum, to which I replied that I had never even heard of it⦠well it turned out she was a former intern there and highly recommended it to us. Say no more. We added it as a stop on our return trip to New Hampshire, and boy am I glad I was wearing my owl shirt in that cafe because this museum is an absolute gem. Certainly off the beaten path in all senses of the word, thereās nothing like it. Incredible carvings, merging the wonders of art and nature. The carver, Bob Spear (RIP) is an absolutely awe inspiring human and seeing his works on display was such a treat. We also got to see some incredible birds from right outside their viewing window. I saw so many hummingbirds up close it brought a tear to my eye! Itās also incredible that so many volunteers make this place a reality and allow so much funding to go to conservation...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreThis place is INCREDIBLE! If you are looking for something interesting to do, you MUST visit the Birds of Vermont Museum. With hundreds of different bird carvings, creatively placed in beautiful habitat displays, this has to be one of the most unique and well-thought out nature museums we have ever visited!!! Most of it was masterfully created by a brilliant artist named Bob Spear, whose insane talent and dedication to birds/conservation will truly blow you away!! We learned so much and stayed for hours.
For winter visits, be sure to email to make a personal appointment. Ours was last minute but we got a response right away because staff is super sweet and accommodating. Big shout out to Kir -- you were so welcoming and we loved talking to you! Thank you for sharing your knowledge of Bob's art with us. We cant wait to recommend this gem of a place to all...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWhat an absolute gem! As we were driving there in our tiny car, we wondered what we were going to find, because the place seemed a bit far from everything else, on a not exactly paved road. It was well worth the trip. Whether you are into bird watching or not, this place is a must-see. Amazing wood carving and you end up having to remind yourself that you are looking at wooden birds, not the real ones. We loved interacting with the people at the museum from the person who greeted and guided us, to the long-term museum member who shared her stories about Bob Spear with us. We also took a short hike on the trail, where there was the healthiest little freshwater pond with frogs and lillies (and apparently a new resident beaver!). There are longer hikes too, but we unfortunately had to hit the road. Highly recommend visiting this lovely natural history and...
