What a great place to visit !
I have been there four times the past year... always bringing someone else, visiting family members and friends, most who are from out of the area... they are always amazed, even if they are not model train people themselves... I may have been there five times... easy to lose "track" !
Astonished that people would give a one-star rating !
Yes, this is a family-owned business, and they may be watchful of the visitors, especially young children who are often filled with excitement and amazement to see and hear all the magic in this extensive model train collection... this is a big part of their home !
The owner and family members are very proud of what they have achieved and built, at a great expense and investment in time and energy.
Tom Sr is always very hospitable and tries to make himself available for answering any questions and talking to visitors; you could not find a more friendly person who shares his love of model trains and their history--history that is part of the whole train layout.
On my visits there, I have seen Tom going around the layout to assist small children with step stools so that they can get a better view... and to talk to visitors to explain some of the history behind various buildings that he has acquired... they are one of a kind and truly unique, along with the stories behind them.
It can get very crowded with visitors, especially during the holidays, so you need to be patient and understanding of others and the family owners who are running the whole operation... from the admittance, and the retail shop, to the train operators who go out of their way to run multiple trains, the actual working roundhouse that cycles trains in and out, and making sure everything is working properly, which is a must on any size train layout.
There are some videos on YouTube that can give you an idea of what to expect--they cost nothing to watch, but nothing that can replace the experience of seeing everything in person... there is no time constraint for when you have to leave, so enjoy your visit, and be friendly with the owners...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWe have taken my son here probably between 8-10 times. This last time we went for his fifth birthday. It was him, and 4 adults, so multiple hands and eyes to watch over the child. My husband went to buy the tickets, and my son and I started walking towards the train area. We were still in the hallway when the āworkerā looked at me and said āIf he gets all touchy-feely, Iām going to ask you to leave.ā It was in a stern almost threatening voice... And again my son had not even entered the train room yet. My son is nonverbal and trains are his absolute favorite thing in the world, so of course he walked in smiling and happy but he was even holding my hand still at this point. I was extremely uncomfortable our whole visit worrying that if my son acted too excited or anything would we stick out. And again if there was any wrong doing on my sonās part, there were 4 adults there ready to stop him. The whole time we were there, I thought, āDoes he say this to every child or just mine because he seems different?ā My husband did address this with the owner and his solution was to confront the worker, who did not apologize. The worker stated that he had said that because my son walked in ārambunctiouslyā⦠Again it was his fifth birthday, and trains are his favorite thing in the world. It is very unfortunate, and I will not return to the museum or be put in that situation again. Again, this was a tradition my son loved as we were there for several of his birthdays and in between visits. We spent $45 dollars to walk in the door for me to not even enjoy it due to being uncomfortable. If this place was just for adults they have achieved that, and unfortunately I would not say it is kid...
Ā Ā Ā Read morecool layout but the owner and staff were douchebags, I'm a young adult who loves trains and have roughly 8k of my own model trains and I had a feeling I was going to be watched the whole time and that was exactly the case. I constantly felt like I was being watched by the workers and I was standing on the far end of the layout by myself for a little bit because I didn't want to stand in the big group of people, The owner comes over to me and asks "any reason why you were standing down there?" Confused on why he even asked me that I just made up some response about my favorite engine being down there and he walked away. The rest of the time I had the owner's son glancing at me and I knew the owner was being paranoid about me. I didn't stay much longer after that because that completely killed my mood. By the looks of these reviews, others have had just as bad experiences as me and I just know the "daughter" is going to make a rude response to this review. Don't have this type of business if you are paranoid about people. most likely never going to make the hour drive to this place again. I recommend finding...
