As of June '24, the satellite view shows a dozen commercial vehicles around the parking lot, and big dirt roadways deeper into the wetland. Happy to say, today the commercial vehicles, activity, and dirt roads have been replaced with wild fields and birdhouses. Only vehicle in the parking lot was me, a porty toidy, and a couple of neat handicapped parking spaces.
Walk from the porty toidy toward Bald Eagle Creek, and there's a brand spanking new, clean, recycled-plastic-decking boardwalk. I didn't get too far, I'll have to go back when I didn't leave my cellphone camera in the car.
Pretty sure a wheelchair could get from the parking space to the boardwalk with no trouble. Maybe go around a piece of gravel or two.
I only saw redwinged blackbirds, no eagles, this time. It would be interesting to know if anyone is occupying any of the birdhouses.
The skinny 10 foot long one-lane driveway between 50-mph AltRt220 and the parking lot that is perpendicularly pre-occupied by railroad tracks would be a formula for trouble, if there were more trains and visitors to the parking area. If someone were exiting the parking lot while someone wants to enter, the car on AltRt220 would have to stop and wait for the other car to finish exiting. Then there's a danger of the stopped car on AltRt220 getting rear-ended. There'll be a few supernovas before an incident actually ever happens, but if you're a first-timer, it's something to get a pre-heads-up about. In other circumstances, there'd be a sign...
Read moreThere is a mowed trail about 1 mile long around a man-made wetland. The trail also passes through grassland and riparian woodland habitat. Many species of birds have been seen there. Plans are in the works for a restroom, pavilion, improved parking, an accessible fishing platform, and an ADA accessible trail to the platform. It is currently the primary access to Pennsylvania's only Keystone Select trout stream that allows bait - an 8/10 of a...
Read moreThis is a really nice little wetland impoundment area. It's sandwiched between ALT 220 and Bald Eagle Creek. It has several mowed paths that meander in and out of some marshy impoundments. It's an excellent spot for plants and birds. There are no buildings or rest rooms and you have to drive over the tracks to access...
