The mission is the oldest standing building in Idaho. It's pretty cool, and really captures that little slice of Americana that makes you proud of your heritage. I remember going here as a child for field trips, and had the pleasure of attending my child's class this spring. However, I was NOT impressed with the littering of anti-white anti-Christian messaging in the museum. In there, they pretend on every other plaque that the local Indians didn't want the white man nor his Christianity, yet the history indicates that at least five generations of them fed the spiritual life of this church. They taint the sacred nature of this place with their anachronism, hate, and retreat into paganism. And why is that vitriol here? Because the CDA Tribe "owns" this historic place, but they conveniently don't have to pay for any of it. The taxes from the white man have that pleasure, via the parks department. Typical, that they'd demand they own the land, but not want to pay for it, and then use that undue privilege to push...
Read moreFirst, now's about the right time to go. Today was perfect. It already stopped raining, and the temperature is cool enough to be just right. I didn't hike the trail so I can't tell about that, but the visitor center has an 18 minute informative movie about the mission's history, and there is a nice display of pictures and more history in the other wing. Then, walking up the little hill, a person can visit the mission and see all the "done by hand" work the Indians and the priests did. Very impressive. Definately done by "soy boys". I took a lot of pics but am only posting a few, because I want you to be curious enough to take the kids. Check out there website. Once a year in August the Indians have a great gathering there. The log is a hollowed out tree truck canoe. Ranger Rob gave an informative talk about how the mission was built. Not only handsome but smart and friendly, also. Be sure to ask about the...
Read moreReally enjoyed stopping here for some great history! The oldest building in Idaho. Have been driving by for many years without stopping. Finally decided to stop and very glad I did. Cost is $7 a carload which includes everything but the museum inside the Visitor Center. They recommend you stop in the Visitor Center first where you can watch a short 20 minute film on the history and details of the buildings which is really helpful once you walk through the mission and the parish house. The visitor center also has the gift shop. The grounds are beautiful which include the Mission bell and beautiful views. There are short trails to a nearby small cemetery and also go down to the river. You can go inside the parish house and the mission. Very worthwhile stop. There are park restrooms in a separate building up by the mission right now due to Covid...
