Museum, Gardens, Mansion, & Tanks to Climb! The Big Red One First Division Military Museum at Cantigny is a fun, interactive museum that is completely redesigned for 2017. The Bug Red One Museum is at the heart of Cantigny Park with its acres of beautiful gardens, the McCormick Mansion, and dozens of tanks and vehicles you can climb. All of this only costs $10 a carload! The museum features everything from World War I trenches to Vietnam and Desert Storm tanks. You can climb on everything dozens of vehicles including World War II Landing Craft and armored vehicles. From children to adult history buffs, the battle scenes and films will capture your imagination. Make sure you allow time to also see the manicured park and gardens and the wide variety of flowers and trees. (See photos.) The stunning 35-room mansion was the home of Colonel Robert McCormick, former Chicago Tribune publisher. The Mansion is where scenes from Tom Hank’s "A League of Their Own" were shot. (More photos!) Plus there is a golf course, another museum, playgrounds, a gift shop and restaurant. Secret: Scout Troops or Packs can still camp at the park each weekend! So much to explore. Cantigny is usually open daily except in January and is about 30 miles west of Chicago.

I cannot speak highly enough of the value of this museum. It is extremely inexpensive for the amount you receive. We got there at 1:00 and only walked through half by 2:30 and it closed at 3:00. We could have taken much longer but we started to realize that it was getting close. There is so much good information You literally have to stay at each section for 15 minutes or so to just really grasp the greatness of the sacrifice of these people. I can't wait to go see this again. Any pictures that anyone takes is only a minuscule version of what it's actually like to be in that space. It is completely immersive with war sounds in the background and tanks in front of you and pictures and maps and artifacts. I have two public folders on my Facebook account (RoseAnn Melcarek) that are for Cantigny if you want to see more pictures.

This is a fantastic museum that honors the 1st Infantry Division. There are interactive exhibits, displays of personal items actually carried by soldiers, mockups of key battles, and, of course, tanks. Tanks are everywhere, and they are not roped off or anything. There are Congressional Medal of Honor recipients honored throughout the museum, too. Take your time to read the bios of these incredible soldiers and try to imagine the courage it took to perform the way they did. I am a veteran myself (25th ID), and I found this museum to be very moving. I feel like they truly and deeply respect the service of those who serve and who have served. All in all, a fitting tribute that honors the traditions held sacred by soldiers. There would be more pictures, but I would rather urge you to go see for yourself. It is worth a visit.

Absolutely amazing museum! I was extremely impressed by how each room you walked through was designed to immerse you into the environment and conditions of each conflict. My favorite section was how you watched a video on D-day in a replica personal carrier like you where on your way to storm the beach. When the video ended the screen went up and it looked like you where actually there! All the information and items they had on display was very interesting and informative. The tanks outside where great to see as well too! It only cost $5 dollars for parking, which is a great deal! The whole complex looked like it had a lot to offer. I unfortunately ran out of time to see it all. I would definitely recommend stopping by this site if you are in the area!

This was awesome and I recommend everyone to go. There was clearly a lot of effort put into the creation of the WW I - VIETNAM display. There is a lot of information to take in through all the displays and would take over an hour or more if you want to read every piece of information. I do wish they covered more information about the current wars but can see there is space limitations. The displays are much larger than you'd think from walking in from the outside. We were greeted politely and given information as we walked in. Very nice place.
