Started at site 3 fossil hunting. Itâs so overgrown that it is challenging to find human vs deer trails (Iâm not new to hiking or exploring woods. Country girl my whole life) Once in the woods zero signage. I got loss in the woods for over an hour with my ASD son! Accidentally fell onto a brush hogged pathway. Wandered on that for a bit found a IDNR wasting disease study tent/hut.(caution on consuming deer in this region if they are studying that disease) Stayed there and called the ranger and was informed that he didnât know where I was but could just follow the brush hogged path until I found a T intersection if I didnât just turn around and go the other way but he was leaving in 5 minutes for the day. 3hours later I find the braidwood kankakee boat launch. From there I called 911 since we had been there hiking since 1p and this was now 6/6:30p. 911 was even struggling to find us. If they could create more a clearly defined path from site 3 and add signs so a person could see where the heck they are, it would be safer. Thanks to the lady who gave us a ride...

Mazonia-Braidwood is one of those places that surprises youâin the best way. The peaceful lakes, open skies, and quiet surroundings make it the perfect getaway if youâre looking to disconnect and enjoy nature.
The fishing here is excellent, with a variety of well-stocked lakes and plenty of shoreline access. Whether youâre an experienced angler or just looking for a relaxing afternoon, youâll find your spot. The views are beautiful year-round, especially during sunrise or sunset.
Itâs also a great place for birdwatching, hiking, or just driving through with the windows down. Clean, spacious, and never too crowdedâexactly how outdoor spaces should be.
Highly recommended if you appreciate calm water, wide open space, and a deep breath...
Read moreBoth fossil hunting and fishing totally rock at the Mazonia area. We've searched the fossil area in the south eastern area of the park. Monster Lake all the way to the south, a bit of a walk to the pits has produced the most. Need to start March 1st though, cause the ticks are horrible. I actually went every weekend of March 2018, and the last week my dog had a few ticks on him. Forget about fossil hunting in the late spring or summer, it's way too overgrown to find decent rock dumps and you'll probably get Lime disease. Fishing is just ok from the shore due to the overgrown shorelines. Belly boats would work best. Great area because there are not too many human...
