As a professional restoration ecologist, I can attest to the beauty of this preserve's oak savanna restoration. I have visited this preserve in the past with my leashed dog. I attempted to visit the preserve today, but there's a new sign stating that no dogs are allowed. This is very disappointing and unfortunate, there is no reason to not allow a leashed dog. As a woman who often hikes alone, I bring my dog for saftey reasons while hiking. I compile botanical lists, keep track of the fauna I see, photo document important findings, submit eBird checklists, all of which are eventually used to develop a web site for each location. If I cannot bring a canine companion, I'll be visiting other natural areas, rather than this preserve, to document their success...
Read moreEasy trail with really great views of the Mackinaw River. Depending on which route you take there is a bit of elevation gain and loss. Perfect for family hiking. A standard two mile hike can be made longer depending on how much exploring you want to do. A lot of time can be spent by the river and on little side trails. There are quite a few sandbars that can be accessed in lower water level times directly off of trails. Very pretty scenery. A perfect place to take the family. Though, no dogs allowed. Pretty hard to get lost here, as the trails are clear and well marked.

I met a friendly and welcoming gentleman at the entrance who gave me a lot of great info and background on the Parklands Foundation... who was volunteering that day to work up support... and hopefully future donations for a good cause! If you haven't been there, you should go....
