Haven't been there in 30 years but it was very nice then. Just moved back to area and plan to visit soon. Talked to DNR 8/16/19 and there is currently no swimming due to skin irritating algae, but fish are not affected and are edible. There is also a fish cleaning stations. Update: So we made the trip and yes, two hours is a trip to go fishing and have to shell out $25 to put my 12ft boat in the wather, and thank goodness I had an electric trolling motor, because the snotty gate person first took my $25, and then told me You can't run gas here. Do you have an electric motor. We're seniors, and Indiana doesn't cut any slack for seniors. I have a 12 ft fishing boat, and I have to register the boat trailer as a 3000 lbs capacity trailer every year. I have to register the boat every year. I have to buy a park pass every year, and I have to pay a boat launch fee every year. I never did see the fish cleaning station, but the algae was so bad that I didn't seriously consider keeping anything we might have caught, and judging from the fact that we didn't get a nibble in four hours, I assume that the algae had probably dropped the oxygen level of the lake and the fish population was probably pretty minimal. Oh - and this is definitely worth mentioning. We had stopped at a bait shop before going into Potato Creek, and the lady there was really nice, and even made sure we were headed in the right direction, since I told her we had just moved back to Indiana, and I hadn't been to Potato Creek in over 25 years. I can't remember why I mentioned the bait shop to the Park gate attendant, but when I did, her comment was. That old woman doesn't know anything.
She definitely contributed to my lack of interest in returning to Potato...
Read moreWhat an amazing Indiana State Park. We arrived on Thursday evening and we’re informed that the dump stations at the family campground were closed for renovations. However the dump stations at the horseman’s camp were open. We drove there to dump and found newly renovated dump stations that were clean, easy to get to and completely updated. After dumping we drove across the street to the newly updated fresh water filling stations, again nicely renovated and super clean!
The renovations on the dump stations at the family campground are complete and they will reopen on 8/7/23. Every @INDNR property should duplicate what they are doing! 4 water stations at one time and there will be 5 dump stations.
The camp grounds were separated into about 5-6 different sections. With a bathhouse in the middle of each section which were clean and air conditioned. Overall around 250-300 campsites. The sites were all level and large. A fire pit and picnic table at each site.
The park itself was amazing! Big lake with a beach for swimming and a place to rent boats. There are paved bicycle paths. You can rent bikes at the camp store. There are plenty of nature programs to attend geared towards children and adults alike. We volunteered to walk the resident Eastern Box Turtle, Lilly, as part of the Explore Program, we also went to the Potter Cemetery to view some of the oldest gravesites. Totally fascinating.
This is a beautiful property and one that we intend on...
Read moreRented the family cabins for the 1st time at Potato Creek State Park. They were spacious and clean. They only have pots and pans, so you need to bring everything else you need. We brought disposable paper plates, bowls, cups and utensils to make it easier. We brought our own linens and towels. We brought our own toiletries and shower stuff. Cabin heater worked well, but if you like extra blankets you can bring those too. The cabin could sleep up to 8 people. Blow up beds/sleeping bags would work to bring too but they do have 4 roll out beds in each of the rooms. Their 2 couches also are comfy, but worn.
The beds were not comfortable, and our sleep wasn't great. The enclosed porch area was nice, but cold. The park was beautiful to explore the fall season. The cabins were more affordable than renting through air b n b etc. If cabins upgraded to add linens, towels, kitchen items, better beds this would be a better deal than renting elsewhere. More people could benefit from enjoying the park. We also did s'mores in their outdoor firepit under the stars which was a great escape from the busy city with sirens etc. There is a wood burning stove inside the cabins as well. They do have bike rentals or you can bring your own. They also have a store, but it's small and prices are high. We brought mostly everything we needed with us. Hiking was also nice, but we didn't really get to explore the park too much while we were there. Highly recommend to check out and see what...
