I love a good roadside attraction and this one has been pinned on my map for a little while. We traveled from Wisconsin to Ohio for a wedding and made the detour to set a world record (even if it was for only an hour and a half). Everyone was a little weary about it as it added some time to our trip, but after everyone was happy we did it and it became a conversation topic for the weekend!
We called on our way (be sure to pay attention to the time change if you're doing in a day) and Mike didn't seem like he wanted to chat, but we let him know about when we were going to be there and when we arrived, he was ready for us. He went through the story, getting into the world record book, then we picked out our color and got to painting. As we painted we chatted more and he told us some stories of all the different types of people that have visited, weird and unique paint jobs, and more.
I am assuming he gets paint donated or he has paint that has been around a while, because it did have a unpleasant smell so we rolled quickly. Don't be too worried about getting it on your clothes unless you are reckless, there are long handles on the rollers, the most you'll get is on the bottom of your shoe.
Its awesome you get to be a small part of a world record and worth the detour if you're in the area. He does accept donations through cash, venmo, or credit card. I...
Read moreThe owners are SO sweet! Call ahead and make sure you give them a time for your arrival. We ended up hitting traffic and were delayed by almost an hour and they were so kind to allow us still. We pulled up to their location and were greeted by dozens of adorable hand painted wooden gnomes and suns in their yard. As soon as we exited our vehicle, their dog, Hailey, said hello to us (a hand painted sign assured us she was friendly lol) and let her owners know we arrived. The family opened their barn and there the HUGE ball hung from the ceiling, suspended from a steel beam. It was a sage green hue with the numbered layer we would be applying ourselves. They gave us a choice of colors and we picked pink, of course! We had a blast as a family slathering this enormous ball (more like a pumpkin shape haha,) with latex paint using rollers. The owner gave us certificates with our layer number and names and had us sign their wall, among thousands of other visitors' names and dates. I had expected to pay for our experience, but all they asked for was a donation to help house their ever-growing ball of paint. Of course, we donated and I bought one their gnomes as well! Don't miss this attraction! These folks aren't in it for the fame or fortune, just giving people a fun family experience...
Read moreWasn't sure what to expect, but this place was sketchy. Saw this attraction pinned on Google maps and decided to check it out with the family on the way home from vacation. It was only a few minutes out of the way so we figured why not. It ended up being in the shed of someone's house... weird but alright. There was a sign on the front glass door saying to go to the front porch of their house but to be careful because the porch was in poor condition and not to worry, the dogs are friendly. Meanwhile I hear these big ol dogs barking on the other side of the fence like they want to tear my face off. I decide to keep my family in the car and I would just take a picture through the glass. As soon as I took my phone out, a couple of women started yelling at me that I needed to make an appointment... definitely wasn't worth arguing with them because at this point everything just felt extremely sketchy. I happily got into my car and left. I don't suggest...
