Thomas Mitchell Park is a hidden gem amongst the vast fields of Iowa. There are a multitude of walking paths that wind about the park through forested areas of mature oaks, Camp Creek twists its way through the park adding a beautiful dynamic to the park. There is a large pond on the upper part of the park with a walking trail around it, rest/viewing benches in various spots, and two small docks. The main parking area has a large covered picnic/grilling area and a large open grassy field for those who enjoy throwing around a football or playing badminton or volleyball. The next parking area also has a large covered Pavillion area, a restroom building, and a playground equipment area that I wish I could've played on when I was a kid. It is simply awesome!! The last parking area is by their rough campsite area. It has around 30 spots for camping that each have their own fire pit and picnic table, there is also a small basketball area, and a restroom building, all nestled into a little hollow like area that is outlined by Camp Creek. Truly a delightful place to spend an evening outdoors!! All in all, a most wonderful Park and one of my favorites that I have visited! I would HIGHLY recommend visiting this park to any family that's looking for an awesome...
Read moreWe stayed at the campgrounds for 2 weeks visiting family. It was a nice campground where everyone adhered to a 10pm quiet time until the 2nd week when several families moved in who stayed up at all hours partying loudly with barking dogs as well. We got NO SLEEP AT ALL!! There are no water hook ups and only one water hydrant that was 200 ft. away from our campsite. The campgrounds host was the most unfriendly that we have ever encountered in all our years camping & did nothing about the folks that did not adhere to the 10pm quiet time. There are no bike trails and only a short walking trail. Someone should replace the campgrounds host and update the campsites or at least install more...
Read moreThis is one of the prettiest little parks I've been to in Central Iowa. However, I have a couple of complaints. They built a graveled path to their two fishing piers, however, you are not allowed to use a motorized vesicle on it. I have COPD, I cannot walk that far, so when the review below me says they are accessible, they are not, this was very disappointing as we came primarily to fish. My second complaint is that any of these "My Parks" in Iowa, even though they have a number to call, and the guy lives right there, they never answer their phone nor call you back. Very, very poor...
