Little more than ruins now but in the 19th century, a vital link in the defense of Texas. Fort Lancaster was an isolated post that protected the San Antonio to San Diego mail route. It is also the only Fort to have been directly attacked by Native Americans.

Located a short 11 miles off of I-10 at the Sheffield exit (343) Fort Lancaster is a wonderful opportunity to look back at Texas history. Plan to spend 2 hours to visit the site. The is an excellent visitor's center that explains the significance of the fort.

The staff is very knowable and helpful. For those that need a little help getting around, the park offers a complimentary golf cart. The best time to visit would be in the spring or fall when the temperatures are cooler.

For those who love history, this is a...

We stopped by for a last minute detour on our way to Big Bend and unfortunately Fort Lancaster was closed (probably because of COVID-19). However, we don't regret taking this detour at all because the view was AMAZING!! (My pictures do not do it justice AT ALL)

The drive from I-10 to Fort Lancaster is 11miles. At first the drive seems way out of the way and uneventful, but once you are closer to the site, the road winds around the mountains/hills. It is a GORGEOUS VIEW that is best seen from the picnic area near the site. I recommend taking this detour just for the view because it is definitely a view you won't forget.

*Warning: I am not sure how pleasing the drive will be for those afriad of heights, so please do be...

Great side trip off the I-10! Doesn't take too long. Also a beautiful scenic drive. Only $5 per person and you can borrow a golf cart to tour the grounds if you would like. Nice and interesting history displays indoors. Clean restrooms. Gift shop with tee shirts and books etc.. Also lots of free information pamflets. Interesting place and the employee working, David Martinez was very friendly and very very knowledgeable! What a great guy. He has lots of great information on the history of the fort-but also gives you space and allows you to check out the place on your own....

This historic battlefield lets you to explore its ruins with golf carts. It’s fort lancaster located in west texas near Sheffield Texas and it’s a fun way to experience some lone star state history. The fort was built in 1855 to help provide more security for people traveling on the San Antonio el paso road en route to California. It was one the forts where the Army experimented with the use of camels for military transportation It’s also the only US Army post in Texas attacked by native americans as back in 1867 60 soldiers and officers of Company K, including many Buffalo Soldiers, held off an estimated 1200 Kickapoo and allies. Most of the fort is in ruins but it’s still fun to explore. Admission is only $5 but comes with a golf cart you can rent to take you around and see the former structures like the barracks, hopsital, and over 20 others. The dog friendly visitor center also has a lot of exhibits to check out to learn more about the fronteri era of Texas.
