The Fitchburg Furnace in Estill County, Kentucky. Built between 1867 and 1868. The Fitchburg Furnace is a steam-blast iron furnace that was the last charcoal iron smelting furnace built in the United States. It is considered a marvel of engineering and stonework, and is one of the top 25 dry-stone masonry structures worldwide. The furnace is 81 feet tall and 115 feet long, and is the only furnace in the western hemisphere with two side-by-side stacks. The furnace only operated for a short time due to a number of factors, including: Transportation problems, Competition from the Alabama iron field, and The Financial Panic of 1873. #ancientruins #history #appalachia #easternky #exploreky

I recently took a trip to Kentucky for a family reunion. This is Fitchburg Furnace in Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky. It’s one of the top 25 dry-mortar buildings in the world. #travel #kentucky #fitchburgfurnace #explore
