Check out Greenwood Furnace State Park in Huntingdon County, PA. It is just 6 miles from Whipple Dam if you want to combine the two parks, which is what I did. I parked at the Park Office and began my hike to the furnace area. Greenwood Furnace was one of the largest and most successfully run iron towns in the country and by 1864 four separate furnaces had been built, including The Greenwood Furnace. By 1904, the scarcity of natural resources started to become a major issue and work was officially discontinued. Pennsylvania purchased the area in 1906 and made Greenwood Furnace a public state park in 1925. Several buildings still stand today including the mansion, church, blacksmith and wagon shop. There are tours of the old town to learn its history. During my visit, I hiked from the furnace to the blacksmith and then headed to the Chestnut Spring Trail. This is a 0.5 mile trail that follows a small stream. It’s a short, enjoyable trail. I then took the short Lake View Trail which wanders through the trees and climbs Brush Ridge until arriving at the lake dam. I next hiked a short portion of the 85 mile long Standing Stone Trail just to check it out. There is 1 mile in Greenwood Furnace State Park. There is also a nice beach area for summertime fun. It was an enjoyable visit to this small but history rich park. I made sure to stop in the park office before leaving to get my stamps. They have Whipple Dam, Greenwood Furnace, Penn Roosevelt and Rothrock State Forest. #hikingpa #paparksandforests #greenwoodfurnacestatepark #rothrockstateforest #standingstonetrail #getoutside #visitpa #explore

Need some history with your camping? Greenwood Furnace offers at least 17 historic relics from a time gone by. The park also has a beach and food concession, a walk-in canoe launch, 11 hiking trails and horse riding trails, a ballfield and volleyball courts, fishing and a fishing pier, and 48 tent and trailer sites (on the other side of route 305). The park also offers educational programs. In winter you can cross country ski, snowmobile, sled, ice skate and ice fish and use the winter warming hut. Hunting is during the hunting season only. I love this state park and have camped here a few times. Most of the camping sites are designed for RVs and campers, with a row of sites that have tent pads, but they are quite close together as any typical state park campground. However, there are two dog friendly spots down below in the woods adjacent to the creek that are isolated, and when camping with the family, we rent both at the same time, though they are actually isolated enough from each other. You can't drive to these sites, but rather you park above at a parking lot near a bathroom facility, and you will have to carry everything down to the sites. It is worth it, whether you take the bare minimum via backpack or make many trips. The bathrooms are clean and one bathroom facility has clean showers with hot water. Drinking water pumps are also available to fill your jugs. There are other dog friendly sites that are drive up. Firewood is available for sale but with the woods surrounding, there is plenty of dead wood to scavenge. Don't be a jerk and cut down live trees or live branches. The historic furnace and buildings are quite interesting and there are plenty of great trails to hike. Not only that, there is lake for swimming with a concession stand. I would give it 5 stars but for the close proximity to a road that seems quite busy for a rural mountain road, as you can hear the vehicles...

Great family friendly park. Great for day trips, and short term camping. If you have an electric car, I will certainly judge you, but no worries about power, there is a charging station at the ranger station. The Park area is beautiful, with plenty of pavilions and nice bathrooms, there is currently no playground at the time of posting because they removed the old one to get ready to put a new one in, but it has yet to be installed. Hopefully it'll be up before next summer. Also the snack stand wasn't open this year because there was nobody to run it. Hopefully the find a company to take care of it next summer. The campground bathroom could certainly use some work, especially hot water situation, the crappy hand dryers, and lack of any paper towel dispenser. Also, there is electric hookup in most sites, however, unless you're the camp host in site 1, you won't have water or sewer hookup, however they do have multiple sources if water around the campground and a dumping station, you just need a way to transport the water if you need a refill, or the sewage if you need to dump before you're stay is up, otherwise you can dump on...

This is a really nice place to come and while away an afternoon. There are hiking trails that range from an easy 1/4 mile or so loop around the lake to, well, as long as you want to walk really. From here you can string together hikes staying almost entirely on trails (rather than dirt roads) that are pretty much as long as you want to go. If you're really hardcore you can through-hike the 68 miles to Cowans Gap State Park. For a more leisurely time you can sit on the beach and soak up some sunbeams, or just take a gentle amble around the park and enjoy the wildlife.

April 2022 - Google asked me to update my review. Not a lot has changed about the park - a few of the staff have retired and been replaced but the park is much as it always was. A nice relaxing place to sit by the lake, play some games, go hiking etc. Only today I took in an 8-mile loop and a few days ago my wife and I went to the beautiful Stone Valley Vista. And for those more hardcore than I you can still hike the 68 miles to Cowans Gap State Park along the Standing Stone Trail. Kudos to those who...
