i had heard rumors swirling that one could swim here, and it was a hot day, late august, sun high, sky blue. i drove over (shoutout to the clearly marked signs indicating where one should park) and wandered until i found a sign advertising a lake loop. it was a lovely 3 mile walk where i got lost in my thoughts (less lake than the name suggests, but beautiful forest and creek portions) preparing me adequately to take a dip. fortunately the hike let out right next to the beach area where there was ample space for my blanket (i forgot a towel) and when i felt as though i could stand the heat no longer, i did indeed swim in the murky and varied temperature water (mostly cold, questionable warm patches). the sand was soft and smooth and though the little kids nearby were screaming about water snakes i did not encounter one (but do exercise caution i guess? ignorance was bliss). wonderful way to spend a brutally hot saturday. do...
Read moreRemote, clean and a great place to unplug and relax. Also Friends of the Parks are sponsoring events throughout the summer. Bands, seminars etc. Greatly appreciate their time and effort. Not only here but other local parks as well. Whipple is more of a private, small party place. Not really set up for large events in my opinion. Picnic tables, old school adjustable height grills, and I believe 2 pavilions on either side of lake. We take teenage girls with friends to the beach at dam. Mtn beach days. Spring fed lake with sandy clean beach. Old stone walls and history all over. There's a great trail around lake. It's challenging but make able in my opinion for all levels. Plan accordingly. Great place to start a mtb/gvx ride. Your close to alot of the legendary single track and gravel road rides. Way less traffic than other...
Read moreThere is a nice swimming lake and a boat rental service. Electric motorboats are also allowed. Stocked fishing all year and hunting in season. Hike the Whipple Lake trail or eat at one of the many picnic tables, especially some right by the lake. Something unusual at this park is what I call the picnic corrals. As you come in the Laurel Run Road, you'll see post and rail corrals (see picture). Each leads to a picnic table down the hill in the woods.
