A few things I want other people to note before visiting and before I actually give the review:
It is a booked tour so do call and book the tickets in advance and be a minimum of 10-15 mins early before the actual tour.
Take good slip resistant shoes/shoes with good grip, those stairs are narrow, and grip those railings for extra support and for the love of everything, GO SLOW, trust when your tour guide says it's slippery because it is! A lady in our tour slipped, from what I was told she wasn't seriously injured but still left to get checked out, it was a bit scary to hear and witness it, so please, GO SLOW on those stairs
Don't recommend it for anyone who's claustrophobic, it is a bit small and because these are pre-booked tours they do fill up quickly, the actual cavern is nice and spacious once you're in but someone with claustrophobia might feel trapped with the amount of people there.
With that said, I loved going there especially since it was my first time ever, Don (I pray I got his name right) our guide was funny, informative and super friendly, the tour itself was short and yes the cavern is smaller compared to others but there are some things in this particular cavern that don't happen in others, so if you're looking for something much bigger and exciting this place might not be it but it's still worth the visit just to compare the unique formations and cavern crystals!
I will say this does feel more beginner appropriate for those who've never visited caverns/caves and want to get an idea of what others might look like, and the history is quite interesting as well! My family and I definitely enjoyed our visit and hopefully we'll come back soon just for memories sake!
I didn't take any pictures because I know myself enough to be clumsy by nature and I wasn't risking losing my phone to the cavern 😆 but others that have visited and posted have some great pictures to show and there's also other things to do in the area once you're done touring...
Read moreWe came here on July 4th weekend (7/1) looking to do something outdoors. We’ve been here once before, about 8 years ago or so. The place looks mostly the same. Getting here is a bit tricky, just make sure you’re using GPS. The tour itself was about 50 minutes or so. It starts in the back on the balcony where we get the intro on the do’s and don’ts. The entrance into the cavern is fairly narrow. The climb down on stairs is fairly sleep and can be challenging for people with limited mobility. The path takes you about 100 feet underground. There’s a bridge area that overlooks the lake straight down about 80 feet or so where you can see the blue color of the reservoir. Pretty cool. For folks with fear of heights, it may be a little unnerving. The chamber in the back is really neat. You’ll get to see all the stalagmites and stalactites, all of which are formed over thousands of years. Do not touch or break anything or there’ll be a $10K fine including possible jail time we’re all warned. The temperature inside the mine is a cool 57 degrees or so. Our tour guide (Ben) was great. He’s a local guide in his 20’s or so, was able to tell us all the history of the mine. I’d give him a 5/5. Our overall experience was great. The price to do the tour is reasonable. I’d give it a 4/5. Overall experience is a 5/5. If you’re looking for something different to do, consider making a trip here. You won’t be...
Read moreThis cave was great! Drive on past the first parking lot through until you get to the gift shop, which is where you'll buy tickets. We got there at 3:30, and bought our tickets. Because they can only take groups of 20, and we had a large group already, we had to wait until 5pm. We were camping nearby at Indian Grinding Rock State Park, and thought we would go back to our campsite to wait, but ended up having so much fun at the gift shop that we stayed on site until it was time for our tour. The town of Volcano is just a minute or two away, and a fun place to walk around while you're waiting for your tour to start.
The gift shop has a wonderful array of geodes and mineral formations to look at, also a glass display case of gold mining relics that some of the employees have uncovered and put on display as well as an array of geodes and rocks that light up different colors when the employees shine a blacklight flashlight on them! Some people in our group but geodes and the employees helped them to crack the geodes open right there.
The cave was smaller than I thought it would be, but it has really amazing formations and a few points of interest that make it a very unique cave. The tour guide was great, extremely knowledgeable about everything in the gift shop as well as the cave, and he had a great sense of...
