We spent 3 nights by the river in Jackson Hole, and it was nothing short of magical. Visiting in mid-April meant chilly weather and the town being in its quiet, off-shoulder season. Many places were closed, and some roads were still inaccessible due to snow—but the peacefulness and stillness gave us a rare chance to experience Jackson Hole without the usual crowds. It felt like we had the whole place to ourselves, and we loved how well-preserved everything was, from the rustic architecture to the stunning natural landscapes.

One of the absolute highlights was visiting The Wort Hotel and the iconic Silver Dollar Bar. This legendary spot is rich with history, and the vibe is something you can’t find anywhere else. Locals were dressed in cowboy hats and boots, dancing to live music like it was straight out of an old Western film. For someone from Thailand, it was an eye-opening cultural experience and one that I’ll never forget. The warmth and energy in that room were contagious—it’s truly a must-visit if you’re in town.

We also ventured out to Mormon Row to see the historic barns with the Tetons in the background. Due to seasonal road closures, we had to walk quite a bit to reach the best viewpoints, and although the cold wind made it challenging, the views were absolutely worth it. The contrast of snow-covered mountains and open fields was breathtaking.

A hidden gem we found was Snake River Roasting Co.—highly recommend stopping by for a cozy coffee break. Their coffee is top-notch and the vibe is just what you need to warm up after a chilly morning adventure.

What really stood out was the people—especially the park rangers. Every ranger we met was genuinely passionate about their work, eager to share tips, and full of love for the area. Jackson Hole is an interesting mixture of fantastic scenery, great restaurants, high prices and terrible traffic. When we were visiting the area we stayed in nearby Wilson, Wyoming but had no choice other than driving through Jackson Hole every day on our way to and from Grand Teton National Park. There is actually a better route between Wilson and Grand Teton National Park. It’s called “Moose-Wilson Road.” Unfortunately for us, Moose-Wilson Road was closed due to construction during our visit.

So we had no choice and had to become acquainted with Jackson Hole.

If you can tolerate the traffic and the high prices, there are a lot of interesting g shops and restaurants in Jackson Hole. There are also some fine hotels in Jackson Hole but you will get more peace and quiet and more room for your money elsewhere. On the other hand, the area is sparsely populated and the pickings are slim nearby, so unless you book far in advance you may not be able to find accommodations other than in Jackson Hole.

The most memorable part of our stay nearby was explaining to our young twins why the town is named ”Jackson Hole.” While stuck in traffic in Jackson Hole trying to make our way to Grand Teton National Park I told our twins an outrageous lie. I explained that, long before he became president, Andrew Jackson led a military campaign against the Native Americans in the area. During a heated battle, young Andrew Jackson caught an arrow in his butt. The injury soon became badly infected and his ass hole ultimately had to be amputated and was buried in the local cemetery. The town has been referred to as “Jackson Hole” ever since.

It took my twins almost half an hour before they began discussing the story in the back seat and finally challenged the veracity of my history lesson.
