Since the MS Museum of Natural Science opened years ago I have LOVED it. If you’re a nature or outdoors person you’re bound to love it too. As I got older and had children of course I began taking them to the museum and they love it too. They always have some sort of special exhibit going on like dinosaurs, physics, fossils, etc. It’s also common to see professionals walking around allowing children to touch/pet baby alligators or snakes etc. as they give educational information while the children enjoy the animals. They have several educational taxidermy animals and fossils to look at and read about. Everyone’s favorite spot is usually in the very back room where the alligators and turtles are, including the massive alligator snapping turtle. There’s several large tanks you can browse as well with all sorts of fish, turtles, lizards, snakes, etc. that are all native to Mississippi. All of the kids especially LOVE the famous Two-Headed Snake! He lives in a special round enclosure in the middle of the museum. For the littles (I believe it’s 5 years and under) there is a room where they can play and climb up a “tree house” and slide down to ride the animatronic dinosaur! Once you’re finished with the indoor activities you can go out the back doors and explore one of the relaxing nature trails. There is also a gift shop where you can find fun outdoor toys, board games, gemstones, shark tooth jewelry, gifts, souvenirs, shirts, stuffed animals, snacks, key chains, magnets, animal figures, and so much more! After you cruise the museum if you’re still searching for more fun you HAVE to take your kids to the brand new LeFluer’s Bluff playground. It’s huge, semi-covered so you don’t have to worry about sunburns, and has AWESOME activities for kids of all sizes even adults. **Notes: The museum is two stories. You enter on the second floor. There are two sets of stairs to access the lower floor but there is also an elevator for handicap access. FRIDAYS are usually school field trip days so the area may be more...
Read moreGreat place to visit with the kids any day of the week it’s relatively slow and quiet on weekdays. I’ve only had one unfavorable visit for 2 reasons and that was today.
Reason #1: Human error on my part and misinformation from hostess. I arrived at the gate and paid for 1 adult and 2 kids tickets, military discount was asked for and not accepted. I found this surprising because inside admissions has always honored it.
Reason #2: I didn’t intend to come to this museum I got it confused with the agricultural museum I explained this to inside admissions and I figure I wouldn’t get a refund, fair enough. The other museum was closing at 2, I wanted to ensure I’d be able yo attend both since I had already paid admission. The desk clerk told me I could return that day so I left. I came back 2 hours later after leaving the other museum and presented my receipt to gate admissions. I told her initially I had the wrong museum and I wanted to come back to use my tickets. She said “I wish you told me that when you left.” Took my receipt and threw it in the trash, it’s my lucky day!
Solution: I’m looking for a re-entry policy to justify why inside admissions would tell me it was okay to return and I’d also like to know for the record, do you honor...
Read moreI visited the Mississippi Museum of Natural Science last year and had a great time! It is located close to downtown Jackson, so you don't have to do much driving to get between this attraction and the city's other major points of interest. The museum is in a beautiful location on the banks of the Pearl River, and it is technically a part of LeFleur's Bluff State Park. The state park supports many fun activities in the area surrounding the museum, including some beautiful hiking trails that I enjoyed after seeing the museum. The museum is composed of exhibits covering the long-term natural history of Mississippi and the modern day environment in the state. Some of the exhibits on modern habitats even feature living animals (typically fish and reptiles) that call these habitats home! The museum was well organized and was a fantastic introduction to the nature and natural history of Mississippi. I liked how each of the habitat exhibits featured a map showing exactly where in the state you can find...
