My family took the scenic drive out to Elk View for an opportunity to see the wild horses. We stopped by on a summer weekend. There was only one other group of people there, but this trail is closely located next to a camp ground and the horses were clearly drawn to the camps. With that being said, we were easily able to maneuver our car to view the horses and were not bothered by any other people.
At the top of the road there's a hill with a short trail. This trail is probably about a fourth of a mile and has a few informational boards; otherwise, this trail just serves as a lookout point over the valley. You're best chance of seeing the horses is down at the road and camp ground or by using an ATV/UTV to drive into the valley. You cannot drive into the valley with a regular car, so plan ahead for this if you're interested.
The horses are skittish, as expected, but overall very pleased! Not much else to do out here, so if you're making the drive know you're there for the scenery and wildlife only. Download a playlist for your drive since there's no Internet service...
Read moreHad an incredible day driving around the strip mine!! Started at the view, and then took our 4Runner on a ride around the roads. Saw lots of beautiful horses, mules, donkeys, and cattle! The horses we saw were so friendly and LOVED the apples we brought! We spent the day laughing and smiling and wanting to learn more about the organizations that take the time to care for these beautiful creatures.
Would absolutely love to come back! Definitely recommend 4WD if you’re going on the trails. Know your limits and be smart. Be kind to the beautiful animals that call this area home. And PLEASE do not litter! There is so much trash here. We went in mid- March and barely saw...
Read moreNo place to leave vehicles without risking damage from wild horses. It was mostly open. Horses are everywhere. We brought apples and carrots. Trails were easy. DON'T TRY TO RIDE THE LOOP!! The loop is not maintained. After you ride for hours, there's a beaver dam blocking the trail. We made it over the end of the dam, only to find the trail blocked by a man-made dam a couple miles down. We had to back-track for hours. There's no office or staff. The visitor center that is "under construction" is a running joke with the locals. Nothing is being built. If it wasn't for the horses, this would have been my first one...
