I enjoyed the small cavalry museum itself but the us army doesn't make it convenient to visit. For starters you have to get a gate pass at the building to the right before your allowed to drive on post. If someone had not warned me ahead of time I would have drive up to the gate only to be turned away and directed back to the office building. Once inside the first thing they tell you is that the museum is under remodel and currently not at its listed location. If you are still willing to visit there's a form you will need to complete with your valid ID so they can run a quick background check on you. If you have been there before I think it goes quickly. After a brief wait and approval is granted they will give you a pass and directions to the temporary location of the museum. The current museum is not that big but it has about a dozen displays on the history of the post and the big red 1. It includes displays on both world wars, Custer and Patton, uniforms thru the eras and a section on women in the military including combat roles. Also pick up a replica weapon and grab a helmet to see how it fits. You can stretch it out to an hour and maybe 90 minutes if you read everything. After that you can visit the small gift shop and see if there are any souvenirs you might like. I was a little picky and didn't find anything this trip. Not much in the way of snacks either. I hope the museums permanent home will be more convenient and accessible but maybe not. If your in the area with some free time it might be worth the small donation to check out a...
Read moreYou must get "processed" for a pass at the military visitor's center to be granted a pass to the base, then after about a 20 minute wait and rather rude personnel you are given a map and are instructed to check in at the military installation. The guard at the gate was cordial at least. When we traveled back to the museum buildings, THEY WERE CLOSED DUE TO RESTORATION!!! Why couldn't they have posted signs or told us the museums were closed before we presented our drivers license, and other personal information when WE STATED OUR BUSINESS WAS TO TOUR THE CALVERY MUSEUM??? They could have saved us both...
Read moreWhat is the purpose of this museum? Or better yet, what has the Army come to? We were at Ft. Riley twice. The first time was for our son's funeral arrangements. I wanted to visit the museum but was told it was always closed. A Sargent Major said he would get it open for us next week when we came back for the memorial service. Came back for the memorial service and it was still closed. So what has the Army come to when a Sargent Major can't even get them to open the museum? If the museum is never going to be open, go ahead and...
