My rating should be N/A because we never actually made it and I only write this review to help others who plan to drive their themselves. I was under the impression that if you have 4WD and deflate your tires a bit, you should be good. We had a Honda Pilot and a Chevy Suburban in our party. We both were in 4L and got stuck in deep sand about 1.5 miles or so in. Luckily, there were a few people in Jeeps that helped push us out and we were able to drive back to the trailhead. Here are my tips/recommendations:
• Just because you have 4WD doesn't mean you won't get stuck. It is like driving in deep snow but worse. The fine grain sand is probably more than a foot deep in spots. Think of something higher clearance than a Honda Pilot or Chevy Suburban. • We learned that it is better to drive in 4H as to not spin your tires as much. Also, you need to deflate your tires to 15 PSI. Vehicle recovery traction boards helped a ton to get us out. • The road is extremely narrow in spots and the road can be busy. If you are in a vehicle that can't afford to lose momentum under the previously explained conditions, don't try it. • The road to Peekaboo Canyon was busy, but any ATV, UTV, or tour company that saw us stuck just gave us dirty looks and passed right by us. If it wasn't for some good Samaritans, we would've had to hike out and call a tow truck. • You may be able to hike it, but I wouldn't even try to hike on the sandy road, which would be brutal! • Take an ATV, UTV, or a guided tour, unless you have a vehicle and the experience to handle the deep sandy terrain.
If this review helps you get there, then you owe me a ride there sometime!...
Read moreI CANNOT stress enough it being mandatory to have a capable 4x4 OR having the ability to walk vs offroad to the slot canyon. We made it fine in a 2024 Ford ranger raptor in baja mode the 1st day lowering tires from 50s to 30s psi. Return day took a 2016 jeep renegade Trailhawk edition with off road tires & lifted but did NOT air down tires h ended up stuck in an overheated jeep as the sand was about 130° end of June. 3 men were able to push us out but instead of continuing the 2nd day we just went to Red Hallow Canyon.
Peekaboo is by far the best slot canyon we've seen & everyone says it's the rival canyon to antelope canyon in Page. However, this one is free. There are newly installed pit/vault toilets at the start of the trailhead which were being installed while we were visiting.
All pictures & videos from me are NEVER filtered of photos hopped as I can't stand when you expect to see colors that aren't present from someone pretending nature isn't beautiful enough as is, when nature trumps filters any day! Beautiful colors in the sand walked canyon. Mid June, even at high 90s, the temps inside the canyon were perfect as no overhead sun being a slot canyon & a constant breeze.
We full time RV since 2020 and have been all over the place. I'd say thus is easily the best slot canyon we've seen! And the fact it's FREE makes it even...
Read moreWow! What a beautiful place!! So here goes my honest review - I have been to Glen Canyon (the area you can only access by kayaking/boating) and there is absolutely no way this compares, but with that being said this slot canyon was beautiful and definitely worth a visit! The sand driving in/out is no joke and I would not recommend for anyone who has no experience driving through deep sand, but I know a lot of folks say just go slow, but that was kind of the opposite for us, we went fast and kept the momentum going for our Jeep and on our way out we did actually have to stop for the razor tour guide and we got stuck yikes because the sand was so deep, but we actually were able to just reverse to another trail like 20 feet back because there are so many different trails branching off but all leading there. The slot canyons were so stunning and beautiful I guess my biggest complaint is that it’s only like a 25 minute hike in so I guess I didn’t do enough research and didn’t realize this. I think if you have a family or young kids this would be a perfect hike! This is not a place I would do a second visit to, but very glad I got to go here! Ps - there are tons of other things to do/see in the area so that is...
