It is a large park with a lake and 681 campsites, many with electricity. It has flush toilets and free showers. Unfortunately, the showers offered little privacy and had few places to put your clothes so they would not get wet. The campsites were generally level and clean. We were there in mid-October 2024. To our surprise, there must have been over 10,000 seagulls filling the sky and lake. It was a sight to behold and totally unexpected in the middle of Kansas. We learned later that some types of seagulls migrate from the north and this accounted for the large flocks we witnessed.

Overall, the park signage was poor and we kept getting lost. The campgrounds were shaded and nicely spread out. The biggest issue we had was the location of the bathrooms, which were exceptionally far from most of the campsites for convenient use. We do not feel guests should have to walk many hundreds of yards to use the facilities. There did not appear to be drinking water access in the campground except at the restrooms. When we were there, there was no camp host and thus the restrooms were not very clean. My wife reported the women’s side of the restroom was filthy and had no toilet paper. Nevertheless, we found the campgrounds to be otherwise reasonable with the major problems being the poorly situated restrooms and overall cleanliness. We actually observed some of the campers were driving to the bathrooms, which is absurd. Generally, we would rate this park 3 stars until there are some infrastructure improvements made to better locate the restrooms to a more central location. Showers could be kept where they are but some flush toilets need to be placed in the middle of the campsites and not at the far end. Based on our experience, we do not plan to return to Cheney State...

I am elderly and disabled and my son just got in remission for cancer after fighting 3 years and almost dying several times. We like to go for drives. One of our favorite drives was driving to Cheney Lake just to look at the water. I loved to go to the pier and watch the boats. We'd stay for about an hour. Now we can no longer do this. They charge just to drive in and look at the lake. I think this is wrong. We don't use the facilities. We don't camp there. We just want to see the lake. We don't have a lot of money. He still can't work. We live on my social security. Cheney Lake has taken away one of the simple joys I had in my life. Thank you Cheney for being a horrible place where people cannot even just take a drive to add a tiny little bit of light into their life to enjoy a brief moment of enjoying God's green Earth. I am ashamed of Kansas and their lake of love and understanding. It's been replaced with greed and people with...

We rented 2 campsites together and they kept giving one of them away to other people. The camp cabin people that watch over us said it was a mistake and being a holiday trying to get anyone to answer the phone was impossible. When I finally did reach the office they said that it was ours and there was nothing they could do about them putting others on it because we should have called sooner. So we paid for July 2nd through the 8th and left on the night of the 6th and didn't get to use the campsite one time even though we paid the $10 a night for it. So beware because someone is double dipping on the payments. Better make sure you get to your site as soon as possible or you might pay for it and not get to use it. The lady on the phone for Cheney lake was kinda of rude and just put me off immediately. Nothing I can do. Yes there is. Refund my money for a site that kept getting rented to others when I already...

I always love this lake. I have camped here since I was born. I love how clean most of this lake is. I love the staff, and you always feel like you are right at home at this lake. We like the South loop on the West side. It is a very popular spot. We used to love smarsh, but the new camp host is running it down quickly. We love the camp host Sherri and Randy on the South loop. The views are amazing wherever you are in the lake. There is an AMAZING variety of wildlife at this park. The park rangers keep it very safe and is never uncomfortable. Yes, there may be drinking on the large holidays, but have never had a problem of anybody getting violent, rowdy, etc. As I said, we love Cheney lake. The trails are amazing, boat docks are clean and can be busy, but people are very polite.

This park is huge. The one side is all tents and primitive RV spots. I don’t not suggest that side. The other side for RVs seems newer and more maintained. Also has more bathrooms and playground for kids. The lake is very big and a dark brown. The lake is also not that deep. They have about five swim beaches. The camping spots have power and water and are spacious. The main down side to this park is that it is very windy. It could have been the weekend that we were there, but I have the feeling it is always windy due to the size of the lake. This does need the bugs down. They have a few hiking trials that are a good length and a few bike trails.

Great Lake / state park for camping and fishing. Water was shut off on October 17th, 2022 but the Marina campsites have water and electricity hookups all year round. Your odds of fishing are higher if you’re on a boat but bank fishing is doable as well if you’re using surf rods and waders. There’s a good variety of species from: Wipers, white bass, catfish, walleye, large mouth bass, crappie, etc. The campsites usually get reserved rather quickly, so if you see an open date, book it! Cabins are available for reservations too. There are two stores / bait shops at the park: one at the marina (O Brien’s) and at the west entrance of the park.
