Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge and surrounding Marshland area encompassing approximately 41,000 Acres of Central Kansas is the largest interior Marshland in the United States. This place nicknamed the "Oasis on the Plains" is the most important stop nearly 85% of all migratory waterfowls a Upland bird game species, and other Shoreline bird species in the United States and 60% of all birds throughout North America. That being said, there still need to be even more protection and more federal grants not just the State/Local or Audobon support but more rallying from the bird watching communities of America. If you've never been here you are truly missing something special I just went a couple days ago the first time ever being in the winter and I thought maybe it wouldn't be a good day for bird spotting but even in January Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge is still mesmerizing. Definitely a 10 out of 10 for everyone you bring. Please do your due diligence of leaving no litter behind.

P.S. I highly suggest following up your Cheyenne Bottoms visit by taking the Wetland Birds Scenic byway that takes you SSE from Cheyenne Bottoms in Great Bend area down to the Quivira National Wildlife Refuge. Amazingly that place can even rival this one but they are definitely a must-see for you and your family. Enjoy yourselves and take care of each other...

What a great experience. 3rd year in a row we have returned for an opening weekend hunt. Very crowded in some spots, not so much in others. Stayed in Hosington. Nice small town, great folks, friendly. Visited Deception Outdoors, the maker of the only Sandhill Crane full body decoy. Very life like and realistic. All decoys made are top notch, made in Hosington. Great Bend is a nice Place with plenty to do as well. Be sure to stop by the Nature Center on the SE side of the Bottoms for a very interesting video on how the Bottoms came about and how the Bottoms helps all wildlife. Be sure to purchase a Waterfowl Stamp at your local post office to support all wildlife programs. 95% of the purchase price goes to support of wildlife not just waterfowl and...

Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge is the best kept secret in Kansas! We passed it by for several years before finally deciding to stop. What a GREAT surprise!

The amount and variety of wildlife is staggering. We had no idea that the habitat would support such a diverse range of species. It's easy to drive the well marked access roads at your own pace and take in all the natural beauty.

The gift shop is a delightful surprise too. There are interesting exhibits and displays supported by quality souvenirs. Science has a strong place at this facility and you'll find gifts that foster the imagination.

Slow down and...

I took an initial visit to Cheyenne Bottoms Refuge a few moths ago and decided to return on my way back from western Kansas . I entered this time from the north west side and took a drive through a single gravel road that seemed to split a water area. There was plenty of bird activity and I was careful to dodge any animals crawling across the road. There were other areas such as the part I initially visited but time was not on my side so I stayed on the single path and headed home. It's a great place to visit and view natural activity.

Large natural sink filled with water and thousands of birds and migratory birds. Great place for bird watching and hunting. Enjoyed seeing so many different species of birds, from ducks to geese, a pelican, white egrets and sandhill cranes as well as smaller birds. We also saw several deer and a few rabbits. Great place to experience nature and see birds of all different types.

Cheyenne Bottoms It's a great place to drive around and look up birds and other animals. You can get on a walk a bit but just be mindful of hunters in the area. There is a short walking trail by the education center.
