We stayed at the Eagle Pass campground in the Walnut River area of Eldorado State Park over spring break 2018. Our campground was quite full and busy. The shower house at the Big Oak campground was open for us to use. The showers were surprisingly warm, although you have to push the button 3 or 4 times before the heat happens. There are 3 fairly private showers with brick walls, 1 group shower, and one handicapped shower. We drove around a lot. There is a lot to do at this state park. Not only are there riding trails, there's an equestrian campground, complete with pens for your horse at your campsite. There is also a coral with a press box and bleachers. There is an archery range. They are building a shooting range. There are areas where you can let your dog off the leash. There is disc golf, a swim beach, and lots of trails to explore. To fish in the Walnut River from November to April you have to purchase a trout sticker for your fishing license. The park has built some nice spots to fish in the river where it runs through the campground. There are some bridges to fish from, but there are also some overhanging spots on the banks of the river with places to lean your pole. The river is difficult to access, if you don't use these spots. Camp hosts are accessible and helpful. The campground was busier than we like, but it was an enjoyable stay. We explored K 177, the national scenic drive through the Flint Hills, a couple of days and learned a lot about the history of the Flint Hills and the Santa Fe Trail. I do wish the park had some concrete pads for...
Read moreI’m biased cuz my family recently co-a boat. So my knowledge isn’t great for swimming areas and things. But the marina shop is cool and it has all the basics you could want for a boat trip. Everybody we’ve come in contact with, staff or not, have been friendly. We’ve had several people there that are more experienced offer to help us.
It’s beautiful out on the water and getting in the lake when it starts getting hot is so nice and refreshing. The only caution I warn with boating is that there are dead trees sticking out in certain spots, but in the daylight they are easily seen so it’s no real big deal.
I highly suggest going and even if you don’t go in the water, it’s a great place to let dogs play or have a picnic. It can get a bit windy which can bring a cooler breeze off the water. So if it’s not hot then you might want to bring a light jacket, but hey it’s Kansas weather and wind, so who...
Read moreStayed here for a weekend. We have been many times. This time the campsites were dirty, dirty diapers on one site, a dirty blanket on the beach, and a giant tree laying in one of the sites we reserved. All weekend the showers were ice cold and most of them did not work. The bathrooms were also a disaster. We paid for six sites and had 9 tents. At one point the ranger said we had too many tents. When we checked with the office she said no but to be safe we went ahead and paid for another tent. When we left we thought we would leave our cinder block fire pit for the next guy and some wood. Our mistake we erred. But then one of our people got a nasty call. We will not be going back and not recommend it to anyone else. Most of this is the camp Host. They...
