This place is pretty special. We haf the opportunity on the way home from Oklahoma to stop by and see the Little House (it actually is not the real little house but it is a replica of what it looked like). When we went there was no one there due to the fact that the visiting times were off season (it begins April 1st). However you can still walk the grounds and see the attractions from the outside, but you cannot go inside any of the things there since it is all locked. So they have the cabin from little house, they have an old post office from the time period and the school house. In fact if you go there and look at what they look like, and watch the television show the schoolhouse and the post office look very similar to the likeness of the schoolhouse and the post office on the tv show. There are other things there as well. There are quotes from the book by Laura Ingalls Wilder. There is an old time plow and an outhouse. There are also picnic benches and beside Little House there is a barn with farm animals. Even in the off season it really is a special place. We will go back there in the Spring or the Summer and spend some time there for sure. If you have some time while you are traveling, or if you live in the area and have not attended it would be a good place to go and learn about the history of this place. It would also be good to take the children for a field trip about American history and literature. I...

The Little House on the Prairie Museum is a delightful destination for fans of Laura Ingalls Wilder and those interested in pioneer history. Located near Independence, Kansas, this historic site brings the pages of the beloved books to life.

The museum includes a replica of the Ingalls family's log cabin, built on the original homestead site, along with a one-room schoolhouse and a 19th-century post office. Walking through these structures feels like stepping back in time, offering a glimpse into the challenging yet inspiring lives of early settlers.

The exhibits are well-maintained, with informative signs and displays that provide context about the Ingalls family, their travels, and the era they lived in. The staff is friendly and knowledgeable, happy to answer questions and share fascinating anecdotes.

While the museum is small, its charm lies in its authenticity and connection to a literary classic. It’s an excellent stop for families, history buffs, or anyone seeking a unique, educational experience.

Tips for Visitors:

Wear comfortable shoes as there’s some walking involved.

Check their website or call ahead for hours and special events.

Bring a camera to capture the picturesque prairie surroundings.

Overall, the Little House on the Prairie Museum is a must-visit for fans of the series and a heartfelt tribute to...

Being in southeastern Kansas the wife wanted to go see this museum. We arrived and happily found it to be open. We paid our money and then spent a few hours wandering around looking at artifacts and replicas that showed aspects of the home and living conditions of Laura Ingalls Wilderness and the place that gave birth to the Little House on the Prairie books which then spawned tv shows and such. Fellow by the name of Bert Horton bought the land and used it for storage and built a barn there. The property appears to be still in the same family and they either built the existing museum or allowed it to be built. It certainly pulls tourists into the area and does a great job in showing how life was back in the late 1800s when Indians lived not far away and one never knew when trouble would crop up.
