Overview: This area provides a gorgeous overlook of Kauai's northeast coast line. You will see some of the migratory and local birds in the area nesting on the cliffsides above the coast line as well as an old light house overlooking the area. The inside of the lighthouse is not currently open to the public; however, since it's not very tall, your views of the surrounding are just as good as you walk outside below and around the lighthouse. There are usually volunteer park employees by the lighthouse to answer your questions about the lighthouse and local wildlife.
Amenities: There is an onsite gift shop that offers plenty of souvenirs, t-shirts, toys, hats, books, etc. They will also stamp your Lighthouse Passport book there. I forgot to check, but I believe there were restrooms adjacent to the gift shop. Please call ahead to confirm.
Parking/Park entry: Park entry is by reservation only as the parking is very limited. Make your reservations ahead of time...usually a few weeks in advance. Note: Just before the park's entrance/driveway there is lookout area (free to the public). Do not park here. You will see the park's entrance on the left of this lookout area, which is accessible only by automobile. Drive down this driveway area and you will come to the park's entry station staffed by a state park employee where they will check to see if you are on the reservation list and tell you where to park.
Duration of visit: Plan on spending about 45 minutes to an hour at this park.
What to wear and bring: There is not really any shade (except for in the gift shop) so you may want to wear sunscreen, or a light long-sleeve shirt, a hat, and sunglasses. It can get a bit windy by the lighthouse, so hold onto your hats, umbrellas, and small chidren! Also bring drinking water, binoculars (or U.S. quarters for the onsite stationery binoculars), a good camera, and some $$ for...
Read moreBeautiful lookout, but you need to have a reservation to get on the actual peninsula. Without a reservation you are required to stand with all the riff-raff that didn't know you had to get a reservation.
You are forced to stand there, looking at the promised land across beautiful cliffs, and seas. You have to gawk at those who are more intelligent than you.
you can’t even pretend to be captain of the parking lot to turn around, cars of the place right there for the unwashed masses define the vehicles around.
Such a lovely view, that you will never ever get to see.
Now, seriously though, it be nice to know ahead of time even actually have a reservation. There is a place to park. There is a place of the stuff but you really do want to get a...
Read moreIf you love birds, it is a must. There are seabirds that are rare to see this close. The Lighthouse is here also, at the moment not open for tours inside. It is a small area, however the reason for a wildlife refuge is to preserve the land for the wildlife, also means to give them their space. I appreciate the small look into their habitat. Hawaii is more than a tourist destination it has heart, soul, and historical/cultural aspects we must respect and preserve. This location is offering protection for ground nesting birds from the predators humans brought to the islands. I personally think helping any living being from going extinct is our duty while we borrow the earth in...
