Another one of our favorite beaches. Parking along side of the main highway. First view is from above with waves splashing into lava rocks. Take the trail down to Lumaha'i Beach can be like hiking in a jungle with all the vegetation and a 90 degree turn. There are some cement stepping pads to aid in the walk down if not covered in soil or other debris. Watch for wet leaves or small round tree droppings about the size of a peanut that you can slide on. Walking stick may help but most people don't use one.
Beautiful beach that will change drastically whenever a major storm comes in from the north. Have been here when the ocean was as gentle as a lamb to where there are 30 - 40 foot waves! These big waves will probably keep you off of Limaha'i Beach as it may be covered with the ocean waves when they come on. Be careful, have seen more than one memorial where a life was lost. Do not turn your back on the ocean water; never know when a rogue wave may hit. Listen for the sounds of a big wave coming in.
Various locations for picture taking on the beach of the ocean waters, black lava rocks, sandy beach, and surrounding mountains with plush green vegetation. Ocean waters will "pop" on a sunny day. Another good place for a picnic, reading, swimming/wading in the ocean water near the beach when the ocean is calmer.
Returning up the path to the parking area and more great pics from above. Will be sprayed with ocean water if the big waves are rolling in! Easy to stay half a day or...
Read moreLumaha’i Beach is one of Kauai’s most stunning and iconic beaches, known for its expansive golden sands and dramatic natural beauty. Located on the north shore, it’s a place where you can experience the raw power of the ocean and the tranquility of nature all at once.
The beach is famous for its breathtaking scenery, with towering cliffs, lush greenery, and the endless expanse of the Pacific Ocean. The golden sands stretch out wide, offering plenty of space to relax, take a leisurely walk, or simply enjoy the view. Lumaha’i Beach was even featured in the classic film South Pacific, which only adds to its allure.
However, while the beauty of Lumaha’i Beach is undeniable, it’s important to approach with caution. The beach is known for its powerful waves and strong currents, especially during the winter months, making swimming here extremely dangerous. It’s best enjoyed as a place to relax, take in the scenery, and perhaps have a picnic while listening to the roar of the waves.
This beach is perfect for those who appreciate solitude and the rugged, untamed beauty of nature. Unlike some of the more popular beaches on Kauai, Lumaha’i remains relatively uncrowded, providing a peaceful retreat from the more tourist-heavy areas.
Lumaha’i Beach is not just a beach; it’s a place to connect with the island’s wild beauty and feel the powerful energy of the Pacific. It’s a spot that will leave you in awe and is sure to be one of the highlights of your...
Read moreIt’s a gorgeous beach, but the ocean here is NOT safe for swimming. The waters are rough and many people have drowned here, even strong swimmers — please research this beach before you go. The waves breaking at the shore are violent and will violently deliver you to the shallows, which can easily cause injuries. This is one of the most dangerous beaches in Kauai, termed Luma-DIE by locals. Stay off the rocks as well — they’re slippery and a big wave can sneak up and sweep you into the ocean (which has happened many times, big waves are recurrent here year-round).
Pacific Ocean is a major force of nature, please respect it. Swim only at safe beaches with lifeguards on duty. Always be informed about surf conditions (check surf reports), and know about riptides and what to do if you’re ever caught in one.
I’m quite a daredevil myself and love an adventure, but even without learning about this beach on my first visit I intuitively felt wildly unsafe about entering the water here. I don’t remember ever being on such high alert about a beach in my...
