This is most likely the easiest of the official hiking trails on east Kauai. It's a good trail for hiking beginners and people who live in the nearby neighborhood who use it as their regular "exercise path." Unlike the more popular hiking trails, Moalepe Trail (and its sister trail Kuilau Trail that it connects with) allows both bicycles and horses, since there aren't any climbing sections on the trail. (Historically, the bridge between the two trails was made so horses could cross a small stream.) Moalepe Trail is fairly straight (compared to how curvy other trails are) with a very gradual incline. Keeping in mind that it used to be a dirt road, it has more of the atmosphere of a well-maintained exercise gravel path (with fences on either side) rather than a rugged trek in the wild. There are some waiwi trees (strawberry-guava trees) along the way, with some fruits just within reach. If it rains, the center of the gravel/dirt trail accumulates some of the water into a narrow stream in some parts. There's at least one part where a large watery puddle can accumulate, which blocks the entire path. Like with most hiking trails on Kauai, the soil has a somewhat clay-like slippery texture when moist, upon which even grippy hiking shoes can slip on, so step carefully on the moist dirt.
Eventually as the trail gets closer to the junction bridge (connecting it to the Kuilau Trail), the fences are gone and you pass through a forest of paperbark trees. Then the trail gets a bit steep and windy for a few minutes before you reach the bridge with a sign on it. This area gets little sunlight, so a rainfall will make the ground moist and slippery for days.
One of the drawbacks of Moalepe Trail is it doesn't have amazing views compared to the Nounou Trails or even Kuilau Trail.
The paperbark forest provides a unique atmosphere near the end. Also, the old, wooden bridge is at a picturesque spot of...
Read moreMoalepe Trailhead is a hidden treasure in Kauai! This 5-mile out-and-back hike is moderately difficult, with mostly flat terrain, though there are a few gentle inclines along the way. Depending on recent rainfall, it can get a bit muddy in spots, but that only adds to the adventure for those who enjoy nature hikes!
The trail is incredibly scenic, surrounded by lush greenery and peaceful views throughout. One of the best highlights is the swing along the path, where you can pause to take in a breathtaking, jaw-dropping view of the rainforest horizon. It’s a magical spot for both a quick break and some memorable photos.
If you’re up for a moderate hike with stunning views and a peaceful atmosphere, Moalepe Trailhead is a must-visit. The mix of beauty and tranquility, along with its accessibility, makes this trail a true...
Read moreMoalepe Trail is a great hike on the east side of Kaua'i that has beautiful views, lush foliage, and an epic tree swing! It's probably one of the sturdiest and best tree swings I've seen on a hike.
It's rated as moderate on the All Trails app but I would consider it easy. We were able to maintain a constant conversation the entire hike.
The trail can get muddy if there has been recent rainfall, but it's mostly flat with some gradual inclines. There are a few spots where the foliage is a little overgrown but the trail is...
