The first thing you should know: this is not a light hike. Much of it is approaching vertical and the ground is going to be slippy basically no matter what time of year - even experienced hikers should approach with caution (yes, you did Yellowstone or whatever, but did you do it in mud the texture of a slip-n-slide?). Wear real hiking boots if you possibly can and don't go without friends who are also good hikers in good footwear. I did make it to the giant rock overlook with my limited experience and riding boots, but that was largely due to stronger and more practiced family members helping me along to make sure I didn't fall. Yes, we passed small kids on the trail, but even adults should take care as this would be a great place to end up sliding off a steep ledge and getting seriously injured if you're not paying attention and exercising caution. Most of the walk was on a narrow through woods and the scenery was beautiful. Don't miss the boot scrapers on...

What an incredible hike! Pretty short, would call it medium+ on intensity. Definitely not a fire road, but short enough to be worth the challenge for people worried. Walking sticks and good shoes help! An incredible amount of microclimates and diversity on the way up, and the "chin" is really stunning - easily one of the most incredible views on the island I think. The little details of offerings and benches really show the care and respect the locals have for the land. Mahalo! I went in good weather, it could be really challenging, and maybe even damaging, to go while raining, so plan ahead! And please be respectful of the neighborhood...

The West side path is a little shorter than the East side and goes through a cool pine forest. Both can be muddy depending on recent rainfall, but not too bad. Hiking boots and trekking poles are recommended. The two paths meet shortly before the Sleeping Giant Shelter (two covered picnic tables) and then there is are a couple other pathways continuing further up with some minor rock scrambling. So whether you take the East or West trail, you will end up with the same summit view. The West parking lot...

Moderate 1.7 mile rt, definitely a bit challenging at the very end with a near vertical rock climb. Beautiful views

Awesome trail with spectacular views from the top. It was super muddy when I went so the descent was pretty hellish! Bring poles when it's raining! Would love to do this one again when it's drier. The ascent through the forest was beautiful and calming, although make sure you've applied bug spray as there were loads of biting things in the wet. Wear shoes with grip as you'll need them on both the way up (for the rock scrambles) and the way down (the mud, the squished strawberry guavas). Awesome hike!
