I was passing through the area the other day and came across this bridge. I will be coming back in the semi-near future to explore the trails, but I did take a moment to go to the observation platform to take in the view of the merging rivers. If you arrive here via route 7, there is parking before you cross the bridge. Yes, you can drive across it, but there is no parking on that side of the bridge. The no parking side is where you need to go to take a short walk out to the observation platform where you can see the two rivers merge. I will update after my return visit at which point, I will hike the woods. This place is a real beauty! More to come in the future... Side note: Someone from the area told me legend has it that George Washington crossed that bridge... I cannot confirm or deny this. Update (June 2021); We finally made it to the area to explore a little. There is a scenic trail that runs along the Hudson River. There is a little area down low that goes to the river's edge. The area is nice. When there on the weekend, there is much more traffic and it is important to alternate traffic crossing the bridge, however, while we were there, several times, vehicles with New York license plates would follow the vehicle in front of them, doubling up and being totally rude to the people waiting patiently on the other side. Please be considerate and not scummy... Most people are decent, but the Bad Apples really do...
Read moreHike the Appalachian Trail, see raging waters, have a picnic, drive over an old-fashioned covered bridge, and maybe fish a little! The trails are well-kept and wide and usually "patrolled," so to speak, by some volunteers from the Appalachian Trail Conservancy during the weekends in summer. I have been coming here since I was a kid and it's one of my favorite places to visit in CT. It's one of my must-see places whenever I have out-of-town visitors! It is truly a stunning, beautiful place and absolutely worth a visit.
There is a carry in, carry out policy. No picnic tables, but you can sit on the rocks and enjoy your lunch, so who needs a table? No facilities.
Some things to know before you go: this is NOT the place to bring kids under 6! (Visit Kent Falls if you have little kids; it's much safer.) There are sheer drops and lots of big rapids. It is dangerous and not suitable for swimming. Swimming is not permitted, and even if people do it anyways, it doesn't mean you should, too! It is full of huge boulders with holes like swiss cheese and the water flow is regulated by a dam, which means as energy needs fluctuate, the water discharge can increase dramatically. Please take my warnings seriously. People HAVE died here from drowning while swimming. Enjoy the water responsibly.
TL,DR: Don't swim, don't bring kids under 6. Enjoy the prettiest place in Litchfield County...
Read moreBulls Bridge is a historic covered bridge in Kent, CT. It goes over the Housatonic River and was built in 1842. It is still open for vehicles to drive over it. There is only one other covered bridge in the state that still allows vehicles to drive over it.
There is a small parking lot nearby. You can walk on the bridge but it is very tight and there are no sidewalks, just becareful for oncoming traffic.
The bridge is beautiful and the view of the river is great; there are small openings inside the bridge to view. There are trails nearby and you can even see the dam spillway. I'm a fan of history and covered bridges, so this was definitely worth a visit and a bucket list item for me. I reduced a star because it can be potentially hazardous for pedestrians. It's only one lane so vehicles from both directions would have to stop at the stop sign and let one another pass. Overall, a beautiful and well...
