This tour put a sour taste on some interesting wine. We drove out from Louisville to make it in time for one of Elk Creek's tours, we knew the tour was free but expected the lead loss to be worthwhile. Coming from Louisville we are used to being wined and dined by the Bourbon Experience or the many competing walks throught the distilling process. This is not that kind of tour. We fpund ourselves as part of a very large tour group which the facility struggled to accommodate. The guide admitted up front, and quite publically, that she did not like to give these tours; it showed. The tour itself is not as much an exploration of how wine is made at Elk Creek Vinyards as much as it is an exploration of the back rooms of the winery. No effort is made to made to explain what makes this vinyard special or to get into the nitty-gritty of how wine is made. The rooms on the tour are strewn with broken and discarded furniture from the restaurant and no effort was made to give this a professional look. When the guide took us out to the patio she led the group far too close to a couple who were trying to enjoy their sampling. Many of the reviews describe a great experience with lodging, the massage packages or the shooting grounds. I quite enjoyed our wine tasting but after driving in a hurry to make this last tour of the day I was disappointed. This is a drive that is far enough from Louisville that you should really make a day out of it. The wine is across the board mostly sweet but their two estate vintages show that the craft is capable of blowing away regional competition. I hope to find the time to return, but I'll definitely...
Read moreThe wine is great, the service, food, management, and everything else in between falls on a level lower than could ever be expected. We had arrived for Mother’s Day brunch with a group of ten (books week in advance) when we arrive the service did let us know there was a water is that was causing toilets not to flush, we brushed this off and sat. What the service fails to provide for us until we had already waited for an hour we were told 90% of the menu was no longer available and only buffet. We shrugged this off as well and ordered buffet, which the arrived as if it came straight out of the fridge. We did not eat our food, and when we had mentioned to the server they had offered a couple complimentary pizzas (which were part of the menu we were told we were not allowed to order just 20 minutes previous. On our way out we tipped our waitress but did try to speak with management who did not even want to speak with us (Lacy) - as we were leaving (lobby smelling like all the pee from those who were in the bathroom that morning) the manager and waitress looked and laughed. How this place remained open and was not shut down by the board of health is against my good knowledge, how the manager continues to treat those customers is the real tell all. Do...
Read moreElk Creek has a lovely set-up. The veiws are breath taking and very relaxing. It is in the middle of nowhere, which was part of the point to me. The wine is fantastic, please try the cab. However, the accommodations were somewhat sub par. There were several imperfections in the rooms (such as the sink not having the appropriate knobs, some of the blinds on the door were broken, etc.). I took the tour which was free, however I would have paid $5-$10 to have a knowledgable tour guide. I felt like the poor thing was all over the place on the discussion and didn't really know much about the processes. The staff were overall nice, but the customer service side of things could be enhanced to give a better experience to customers. I had the Margherita pizza at dinner & it was so good! On the other side of that, the "continental breakfast" was just that--- zero protein options, coffee, hot water to make oats, cereal, a few bagel and muffin options, and a couple pieces of waxy fruit. It would def. be in the best interest of the company to invest in a waffle maker and some eggs/bacon or even a Greek yogurt. I would probably come back for a day trip, but not...
