Great spot to walk at your own pace, see a variety of birds, and a bunch of lizards running around. Really loved seeing that they seemed well cared for, especially considering you can see that many have visible injuries (hence why they are there). Great walkway and viewing spots. No workers on site, so it's completely at your own pace. Some shade, but extremely hot and humid the day we went. Also if you walk clear down to the water area, it's pretty muddy and watch out for the face level spider webs (that was a fun experience lol)
Also, we got an Uber there... Apparently upon pickup they mentioned the pin was directing them to the main road not the sanctuary parking lot, so add a comment on where you are.
Lastly, I think the visitor center, gift shop, hospital portion is somewhere else. Aka a drive away, so we couldn't visit that area without a car or too many Uber rides. Probably a cool spot to visit though
Would definitely go again if I ever visit the keys...
Read moreReally nice, beautiful place for a quick stop (we were there for about 30 minutes). All the birds are in well-kept, clean areas with a nice enough space. They all looked healthy and alert (even given their permanent injured status). The area is really nice to walk through with a boardwalk and benches throughout, and shade of trees. You will also see the mangroves and natural vegetation as you walk through. When you reach the end you arrive at the ocean and can additionally walk a short, natural trail along the shallow beach. This additional trail is very narrow, though, and can be muddy from the tide so I recommend sneakers. But it's a great, quick view--you can stand and see the sea, other wild birds wading in this area too. Please donate what you can for their great cause--you can leave cash or they have machines to accept credit/debit donations too (and I note that no one was at the entrance hassling you for...
Read moreIt's a great little place. There's no fee to go but they appreciate donations. You can give cash or there's a tablet you can donate with your card. All the birds that are there can't be released back in the wild and need care. Each bird has a sign that says why they're there and a bit about the type. It's very informative. You can walk along the pathway until the waters edge. It's very shallow so you can look at all the little fish and sea creatures too. Watch your head as you walk if you're taller, there's lots of orb weaver spider webs from tree to tree. They're harmless spiders that are cool to look at. All in all it was a cool little side detour on our day trip. There's a very small amount of parking with not much room, so if you have a very large truck, trailer or RV you're not going to be able to fit in...
